BREAKING : Cowboys insider pitches wild last-ditch solution to keep Trevon Diggs in Dallas

It’s been over a month since Trevon Diggs suffered a concussion inside his own home and subsequently landed on injured reserve due to an apparent knee injury.

It’s not like Diggs was making much of a difference anyway. In fact, he’s played pretty poorly this season. Opposing quarterbacks have a 154.9 passer rating when targeting Diggs. That’s almost a perfect passer rating for a quarterback. It’s not like the other corners have been that much better, but Diggs is getting paid to bring (a lot) more to the table.

In light of Diggs’ struggles and injury, Cowboys insider and film analyst Bryan Broaddus floated a wild idea to get the most out of the former All-Pro: playing him at safety. That is currently working for another high-profile cornerback in the NFL.

Can Cowboys resurrect Trevon Diggs by playing him at safety?

The Pittsburgh Steelers made the leap of faith to move Jalen Ramsey from cornerback to safety. It was a mutual move between both parties to help stabilize the Steelers’ defense. It hasn’t fully helped Pittsburgh turn it around, but Ramsey has performed well at safety.

What do the Cowboys have to lose at this point with Diggs? They got their best performance of the season against the Raiders with DaRon Bland, Caelen Carson, Shavon Revel, and Reddy Steward playing all of the cornerback snaps.

The only issue is rotating Donovan Wilson and Malik Hooker. Wilson has been on the end of multiple busted coverages this season, and it shows with his 50.4 PFF grade, which ranks 82nd out of 93 safeties. Fans can blame Matt Eberflus all they want, but at the end of the day, the players have to be good enough, too.

The upcoming Eagles game would be a nice test to see which pieces can be moved around, assuming Diggs returns from IR for the Thanksgiving game against the Chiefs. Diggs is also dealing with a knee injury, but the Cowboys expect the sixth-year man from Alabama to return to the field this season.

It’s been a shaky season for Diggs. It started with the Joneses taking $500,000 out of Diggs’ paycheck for rehabbing his ACL injury away from the team facility. Eventually, Jerry Jones called out his leadership, and on top of that, his close friend Micah Parsons was traded. Diggs has completely underperformed to his potential, which has only exacerbated the situation.

Everything may be set in stone for Diggs to leave his helmet and find a new home after 2025, but testing him out at safety might be the Cowboys’ last gap to potentially keep. It’s certainly a long shot, but it can’t get any worse than what fans have seen from No. 7 this season.
