When the Dallas Cowboys’ offense took the field for the first time against the Las Vegas Raiders this past Monday night, superstar wideouts CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens were noticeably absent. Naturally, given the team and players involved, it took mere moments for this to become a massive story, and it certainly didn’t stop when both entered the game on the Cowboys’ second offensive drive just a few minutes later.
In the aftermath of Dallas’ emphatic 33-16 victory, Brian Schottenheimer attempted to clear the air, simply saying, “There were some things that were missed,” seemingly implying that his dynamic duo had missed a team meeting or a film session or something of that nature. Schottenheimer refused to divulge any details beyond that, and Lamb also declined to discuss the situation in his postgame on-field interview. Pickens actually attempted to mask things by saying the decision was all about strategy, which was absurd but absolutely hilarious.
Simply put, this massive story really isn’t that much of a story at all. What should be the bigger story is that, after missing that first series, both Lamb and Pickens took the field and balled out something fierce, combining to record 14 receptions for 210 yards, with each catching one of the four touchdown passes thrown by Dak Prescott, who made all sorts of history with one of his best overall performances of the season.
And with their respective outings, both Lamb and Pickens made a little history of their own as well.
CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens rewrote all sorts of Cowboys history on Monday night
As he’s been with America’s Team for far longer, we’ll start with Lamb, who ended his night in Vegas with five receptions for 66 yards. With his first catch of the night, which just happened to be his 18-yard touchdown just nine seconds into the second quarter, the sixth-year veteran reached 532 regular-season receptions for his career, thus breaking out of a tie with Dez Bryant to take over solo third on the Cowboys’ all-time list. Ending his evening with 536, Lamb now trails only Jason Witten (1,215) and Michael Irvin (750).
The touchdown marked the 40th of Lamb’s career, and with Monday being his 88th regular-season appearance, he’s now the third-fastest in franchise history to reach 40 TDs, behind only “Bullet” Bob Hayes (48 games) and Bryant (59 games).
As for Pickens, who was actually encouraged by Dez on Monday night to re-sign with the Cowboys this upcoming offseason, the former Pittsburgh Steeler had a monster night in Sin City, catching nine passes on 11 targets for a game-high 144 yards, thus upping his season total to 908 yards, which ranks second in the NFL behind only the Seattle Seahawks’ Jaxon Smith-Njigba (1,146).
Those 908 receiving yards are also the most of any player in Cowboys history through his first 10 games with the franchise. The record previously belonged to Amari Cooper, who went for 831 yards in his first 10 games with Dallas between the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
Furthermore, in catching his seventh touchdown of the season, Pickens is just the fourth in Cowboys history with at least 900 receiving yards and seven touchdowns through the first 10 games of a season, joining Hayes (1966), Irvin (1995), and Terrell Owens (2007).
