The Detroit Lions proved once again that they are anything but the “same old Lions” on Sunday as they made the visiting Tennessee Titans their latest Ford Field victim.
Detroit rattled off 14, 17 and 21 points in the first three quarters of the game action, respectively, en route to a 52-14 win to improve their record to 6-1 on the season.
Detroit’s last score was the coup de grace for diehard Lions fans who stuck around to watch one of Dan Campbell’s prized rookies set a franchise record.
Lions rookie Jake Bates, who previously kicked for the United States Football League (USFL) Michigan Panthers, nailed his 11th field goal in 11th tries, setting a new franchise record for most consecutive field goals made to start the season in the process.
Bates’ kick catapulted him past former Lions kicker Riley Patterson in Detroit’s record books.
It was the longest kick of Bates’ first year NFL career and it came amid a flurry of short-field scores by a turnover-crazed Lions defense on the day.
Detroit was outgained 416 to 225 by the Titans, but looks can be deceiving. Detroit’s four turnovers ruled the day as Campbell’s team vaulted itself further forward in pursuit of its second trade division crown in the NFC North.
Next up for Detroit is arguably the biggest game of the season so far, a road clash against Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers at 4:25 p.m. ET next Sunday.
The Lions are just a half-game up on Matt LaFleuer’s team, raising the stakes dramatically. Expect a sea of green and yellow cheesehead-clad Packers fans at Lambeau Field next Sunday, but also plenty of Lions fans as Detroit has proven lately that they travel as well as any other fanbase.
