Dallas Cowboys place former Alabama cornerback on injured reserve

The Dallas Cowboys will be without cornerback Trevon Diggs at least until their Thanksgiving game against the Kansas City Chiefs after the former Alabama defensive back went on injured reserve on Saturday.

The Cowboys announced Diggs’ placement on IR on Saturday after he missed practice this week because of a concussion. In the IR announcement, Dallas added a knee injury to Diggs’ ailments.

Diggs missed Sunday’s 44-22 victory over the Washington Commanders after he arrived at the NFL team’s facility two days before the game with what turned out to be a concussion sustained at home. The Cowboys have not elaborated on the injury beyond that explanation.

Diggs played 329 defensive snaps in Dallas’ first six games this season even though rehabilitation from a knee injury kept him on the physically-unable-to-perform list until Aug. 24.

Diggs missed six games last season with a knee injury and had chondral bone graft surgery in January. The PUP designation kept him from practicing with the team until after the Cowboys had completed their preseason schedule.

Against Washington, Diggs’ absence meant more playing time for rookie Trikweze Bridges. The former Lanett High School standout played 53 defensive snaps against Washington after playing 26 in the first six games of the season.

NFL rules require players on injured reserve to miss at least four games. The Cowboys play the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Arizona Cardinals on Nov. 3, Las Vegas Raiders on Nov. 17 and Philadelphia Eagles on Nov. 23 in their next four games.

A second-round draft pick by Dallas in 2020, Diggs was a first-team All-Pro selection in 2021 when he led the NFL with 11 interceptions. He earned Pro Bowl recognition again in 2022 before injuries affected his past two seasons.

In July 2023, Diggs signed a five-year, $97 million contract extension. But Diggs played in only the first two games of the 2023 season before a torn anterior cruciate ligament caused him to miss the rest of the campaign. Last year’s ailment affected the same knee and caused Diggs to miss six of the Cowboys’ final seven games.

In July, Dallas reduced Diggs’ base salary for the 2025 NFL season from $9 million to $8.5 million.

Diggs’ contract required him to participate in at least 84.375 percent of the offseason program at the Cowboys’ facility or have his salary reduced by $500,000. Other than the three-day mandatory minicamp, Diggs was hardly there, choosing to undertake his rehab work with personal trainers and physicians rather than those on the Dallas staff.
