Although quarterback Dillon Gabriel is the Cleveland Browns’ starter in Week 7 against the Miami Dolphins, there’s always a chance NFL fans get to see backup Shedeur Sanders.
Sanders has yet to appear in the regular season, so fans and analysts are dying to see what the former Colorado Buffaloes signal caller is made of. Given Gabriel has only started two games and isn’t turning the ball over, the odds are not in Sanders’ favor to appear on Sunday.
However, one NFL analyst isn’t totally ruling out the possibility of Sanders having his opportunity to shine and explained how it could happen.
How Can Shedeur Sanders Get on the Field Against the Dolphins?
The Dolphins are one of the worst teams in the league, so this could be Gabriel’s best shot to prove he’s the Browns’ quarterback of the future. Alternatively, if he’s greatly disappointing early in the matchup, an NFL analyst believes it could be terrible for his career.
Analyst Tony Grossi explained on ESPN Cleveland how poorly Gabriel would need to play for Sanders to get his shot this week.
“There’s going to be a call for it if Gabriel turns the ball over three times in the first half,” Grossi said. “Now if they’re handing off and punting, there’s no reason to make a change, but if Gabriel is the reason they’re in a hole to Miami at halftime, you know that stadium is going to be loud now. Whether Stefanski does it, we’ll see. He has not in the past with anybody else.”
Let’s start by addressing the obvious, which is that there’s a very slim chance Gabriel performs this badly against Miami’s defense. PFSN ranks the unit No. 31 among defenses with an impact score of 58.5. Not to mention, he is yet to throw an interception.
As exciting as it would be to see Sanders this early in the season, odds are he won’t get his chance against the Dolphins, or potentially anytime soon. NFL legend J.J. Watt recently shared bad news for those hoping to see Sanders on the field for the Browns.
“I think Dillon Gabriel has this offense,” Watt said on CBS Sports HQ. “He’s in command of it, he’s the one who they are trying to build this around, and Shedeur is going to continue to grow and develop in that role behind him.”
Browns-Dolphins kicks off at 1 PM ET on Sunday in Cleveland.
