Earlier in the week, the Detroit Lions waived safety Loren Strickland. It was an interesting move in waiving Strickland, considering the status of the safety position and the fact the Lions didn’t immediately add a replacement to the active roster. That addition took a couple of days, but the Lions are filling the open spot on the 53-man roster by signing defensive back Jammie Robinson.
The pending signing was first reported by Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.
Robinson, 24, was a fifth-round pick by the Carolina Panthers in the 2023 NFL Draft. He played collegiately at Florida State. Robinson played 21 total games over two seasons in Carolina, though just 75 defensive reps in those games. He was waived late in 2024 and claimed by the Arizona Cardinals, but he did not make Arizona’s 53-man roster in this summer’s preseason. Robinson was signed off the Chiefs practice squad, where he’s spent the first six weeks of the 2025 season.
Looking back to when Robinson was a draft prospect, I profiled him after his NFL Scouting Combine interview. He confirmed he met with the Lions there and also at the Senior Bowl that year. Being undersized and not terribly fast (his 4.59 40-yard dash at the Combine checked on his FSU tape) have been hindrances to getting on the field thus far. In Detroit, with the top three safeties all likely out for Monday’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brian Branch is suspended, while Avonte Maddox and Kerby Joseph both are battling injuries that head coach Dan Campbell did not seem optimistic about for Week 7.
