Chiefs’ latest roster moves swap defense for offense on practice squad with return of recently released player

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15) adn wide receiver Jason Brownlee (89) celebrate after defeating the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium.

The Kansas City Chiefs have re-signed a recently released player to their practice squad.

Jason Brownlee is back with the Chiefs after first being waived from the 53-man roster on Monday, following the team’s activation of WR Rashee Rice from the reserve/suspended list. He cleared waivers on Tuesday and is now officially back with the team on the practice squad. He tweeted out a message to his followers on Tuesday morning.

“My story gone end legendary,” he wrote, followed by a dual exclamation point emoji, a shooting star emoji, and emojis that seem to represent the phrase, brick by brick.

Brownlee appeared in five games for the Chiefs over the past six weeks, playing 21 snaps on offense and 21 snaps on special teams. He was targeted once on offense with no receptions and recorded two tackles on special teams. He was a preseason standout after catching a goal-line fade for a touchdown from Patrick Mahomes in preseason Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals.

The Chiefs now have two wide receivers on the practice squad, including Brownlee and Jimmy Holiday. They’ve got seven receivers on the 53-man roster.

Chiefs DB Jammie Robinson terminates his practice squad contract

In a corresponding move, DB Jammie Robinson has terminated his contract with the Chiefs’ practice squad. The former fifth-round draft pick by the Carolina Panthers in the 2023 NFL Draft has appeared in 21 career NFL games, with two starts, but didn’t appear in a game with Kansas City. This is a unique situation because the league made the distinction that Robinson decided to terminate his contract. It was not the team’s decision. Perhaps Robinson sought to pursue opportunities elsewhere with a better shot at playing time, as he was likely DB No. 5 on the Chiefs’ roster behind everybody else on the team’s 53-man roster. There could also have been something in his contract that made it more favorable for him to terminate his deal, rather than the team doing so.
