BREAKING NEWS : Cowboys’ defense robbed Dak Prescott of celebrating making franchise history

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott came into Sunday’s matchup against the Carolina Panthers with the chance to rewrite a couple of franchise record books.

First, there was the thing he was asked about most in the days leading into this Week 6 contest, that being that his next victory would give him 79 regular-season wins for his career, thus moving him past Tony Romo for the third-most in Cowboys history. But that one will obviously have to wait, as Dallas, despite yet another solid effort from Prescott, took a 30-27 loss.

On the positive side of things – well, at least as positive as one can get out of yet another disappointing defeat – early in the second half, Dak did take over second place on the Cowboys’ all-time passing yards list, surpassing Troy Aikman.

Dak Prescott passes Troy Aikman, now has second-most passing yards in Cowboys history

With 261 yards on the day, Prescott now has 33,054 for his career, putting him 112 ahead of Aikman, who tallied 32,942 during his 12-year run with America’s Team. The 32-year-old now needs just 1,130 to surpass Romo (34,183) for the all-time lead.

While Prescott should be incredibly proud of what he just accomplished, he unquestionably would have rather gotten his 79th victory. And while he’s too great of a teammate to ever come out and say this publicly, he just has to be incredibly frustrated with the Dallas defense, as Matt Eberflus’ unit is wasting some of these fantastic performances he’s had this season.

In completing 25 of 34 passes for 261 yards and three touchdowns against zero interceptions on Sunday, Prescott has now completed 71.8 percent of his passes for 817 yards with 10 touchdown passes and no picks over the last three weeks, also adding an 11th score on the ground. And in those three games, he has a 1-1-1 record to show for it, which is absolutely absurd. But that’s just what happens when your defense allows the most yards and nearly the most points per game in the entire league.

With his three touchdown passes against the Panthers, by the way, Dak has now thrown for three or more TDs 39 times in his career, putting him just one behind Romo for the most such games in Cowboys history. Those 39 games are also the sixth-most by a quarterback in his first 10 seasons.

Prescott will take his next shot at win No. 79 next Sunday in a huge divisional matchup with the Washington Commanders.
