Right now, the Detroit Lions are focused on their upcoming game against the Kansas City Chiefs on the road on Sunday, October 12, and now isn’t a time to look back. For the Lions, looking back is a brag-worthy thing, because they’ve won the past four of their five NFL games this season.
The most recent win for the Lions, of course, was against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, October 5, which ended with a 37-24 final win for Detroit. Now the Lions are 4-1 for the season, and the Chiefs are 2-3. The Chiefs, actually, just lost against last weekend to the Jacksonville Jaguars in an upset loss, so they’ll be raring for a win, and the Lions better be ready.
But, looking back as last weekend’s Lions game, there was some drama that went down on the field. Specifically, one Motor City player is being hit by the NFL by a punishment for his actions in the Lions vs. Bengals matchup.
NFL Penalizes Detroit Lions Player
Every week during the regular NFL season, the league penalizes players for their actions in the previous week’s games. The NFL notes on their website that these actions are “to protect players from unnecessary risk and preserve competitive balance and game integrity, the NFL and NFL Players Association have agreed on a set of game-related rules violations that may result in accountability measures.” The new roster of players getting hit with punishments goes up every Saturday afternoon.
In the NFL’s report for Week 5, Detroit Lions tight end Brock Wright was hit with a $11,883 penalty for “unnecessary roughness” for “striking/kicking/tripping/kneeing.”
During the game, Bengals pass rusher Trey Hendrickson clocked two sacks, and during one of them, as Hendrickson was running towards Goff, Wright appeared to try to trip Hendrickson. He wasn’t penalized on the play but got hit with the fine.
That bag will go to a good cause. According to the NFL, those fines will go to the Professional Athletes Foundation to “support legends in need and the NFL Foundation to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels, including youth football and the communities that support the game.”
Looking at the Detroit Lions vs. Kansas City Chiefs Showdown
The Lions vs. Chiefs game is going to be in prime time, so it’s going to be one of the most watched games of the weekend. Analysts are favoring Jared Goff and the Lions by a bit, even though the game is away.
Jordan Dajani of CBS Sports thinks the Lions end the game 31 and the Chiefs will be 27. “The Lions have won four straight games after losing the season opener to the Green Bay Packers, which is actually the longest active win streak in the NFL,” he notes in a Thursday, October 9, feature. “Detroit is averaging 40.3 points per contest over this four-game stretch. Is anyone missing Ben Johnson yet?” The answer is “no.”
Steven Taranto predicted the Lions will be 31 and Chiefs will be 27. “Over the past few years, I’ve gotten the sense that the Lions have been one of the only few teams in the NFL that truly hasn’t been afraid of the Chiefs dynasty,” he says.
The Chiefs are looking weak and powerless (not to be confused with the A Perfect Circle song by the same name) coming out of that Jags matchup, so this is a perfect time for the Lions to roar. Is it Sunday yet?
