The Green Bay Packers could potentially receive a trade call about one of their top playmakers during their bye week following the latest major NFL injury.
During Sunday’s first window of games, the New York Giants suffered a significant blow when top wide receiver Malik Nabers went down with a knee injury late in the second quarter after trying to secure a deep reception from rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart.
The Giants ended up carting off the tearful Nabers into the locker room, after which point further testing confirmed that the 2024’s No. 6 overall pick had torn his ACL. The team formally placed him on injured reserve with his season-ending injury on Monday.
With Nabers lost for the season, the Giants could scour the trade market for more help if they have doubts about the effectiveness of Wan’Dale Robinson, Darius Slayton and Jalin Hyatt as their primary receiving trio. And, while the Packers are unlikely to have much interest, that could prompt New York’s front office to call about Romeo Doubs.
“This is the final season of Doubs’ rookie contract and the Packers can’t re-sign all their receivers,” CBS Sports’ Jeff Kerr wrote Monday, pitching Doubs as a top Giants trade option. “They do like Doubs, but he could have a strong future as a No. 2 wideout in New York. He would be another player to grow with Dart while getting WR1 targets.”
Romeo Doubs Remains Too Valuable to Trade Away
The Giants would likely feel better about their Nabers-less offense moving forward if they managed to acquire Doubs in a trade. Unfortunately for them, Green Bay seems highly unlikely to even engage in trade talks about him after Sunday’s performance.
Doubs caught six of his eight targets for 52 yards and a career-high three touchdowns in Sunday’s 40-40 tie with the Dallas Cowboys, becoming the embodiment of reliability for quarterback Jordan Love as they went blow for blow with the opposing offense. His four touchdown catches through four weeks are tied for the third most in the NFL.
Despite the Packers’ ability to spread their offense between numerous passing targets, Doubs is on a career pace with 13.8 yards per reception and a career-best 68.4 catch percentage through the first four games of the 2025 season. Even if the Packers do not have plans to extend him after 2025, he is too vital to their Super Bowl ambitions for them to deal him away to another team — unless the offer is overwhelmingly strong.

Will Christian Watson Return for Packers After Bye?
While the Packers won’t likely trade Doubs, they could see their receiver room become even more crowded before they face the Cincinnati Bengals on the road in Week 6.
Once Week 5 formally begins, Packers wide receiver Christian Watson will be eligible for activation from the reserve/physically unable to perform (PUP) list after spending the first four weeks of the regular season recovering from last January’s torn ACL.
If the Packers are happy with his progress, Watson could return to the practice field as soon as next week’s practices for the Bengals; although, the NFL rules allow him to practice without activation for three weeks before the Packers must make a decision.
Watson’s return won’t likely motivate the Packers to do anything drastic with Doubs before the trade deadline, but it will be interesting to see how they reorganize their wide receivers once the former second-round speedster is given the green light to play.
The Packers have Dontayvion Wicks, Malik Heath and rookies Matthew Golden and Savion Williams also fighting for reps in the current rotation. They also have Jayden Reed on injured reserve with expectations that he will return later on in the season.
