The Kansas City Chiefs’ decision to sign wide receiver Tyquan Thornton to their practice squad on Monday highlights a clear focus on speed as a cornerstone of their offensive strategy.
The Chiefs have developed a pattern of seeking out receivers with elite speed, as evidenced by their connection to the few players in the league who have recorded a 4.28-second 40-yard dash or faster at the NFL Combine.
This exclusive group includes players such as Tyreek Hill, John Ross, Hollywood Brown, Xavier Worthy, and now Tyquan Thornton-all of whom are or were part of the Chiefs’ roster.
“There are 5 WRs in the league that run a 4.28s forty-yard dash or faster: Tyreek Hill, John Ross, Hollywood Brown, Xavier Worthy, and Tyquan Thornton. All of them are or were Chiefs,” a fact that illustrates Kansas City’s commitment to building an offense around speed and explosive playmakers.

Thornton, a former second-round pick by the New England Patriots in 2022, demonstrated his potential at Baylor with 2,242 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns in college.
Despite his speed and playmaking ability, his NFL career has yet to flourish. He caught 22 passes for 247 yards in his rookie season but saw his production dip to just 13 catches in 2023. In 2024, he managed only four receptions before being waived by New England on Saturday.
Kansas City’s decision to bring in Thornton follows their 30-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, signaling their intent to deepen their offensive roster. With Patrick Mahomes leading a team that prioritizes vertical threats, Thornton has the opportunity to find his footing in a system designed to amplify his strengths.
This move reinforces the Chiefs’ reputation for valuing speed, setting them apart as a franchise willing to go the extra mile to dominate in today’s fast-paced NFL.
