Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub spoke with reporters before practice on Thursday, sharing his thoughts on attempting to block kicks during games.
“I just think it was the weekāthe luck of it. The guys are trying to block them; everybody is. I think there were some low kicks in there if you look at it (and) some issues. Particularly in the blocking on that one team, where they had two against the Rams,” said Toub, “You’ve got to get that fixed during the game. If you have one you got to get it fixed right away because they are going to keep coming back at it. I think they did that in that A gap. I think it was just one of those weeks where there were a lot of them.”
Chiefs linebacker Jack Cochrane was able to block an extra point attempt last Sunday in the victory over the New York Giants in Week 3.
“Going into our game by the time we played, we already knew there was a bunch of blocks, and we said, ‘hey, let’s join the crowd.’ Obviously, we got our block,” said Toub. “Obviously, Graham Gano got hurt, and they had the left-footed punter in there kicking and a different holder, but we took advantage of the situation, so I was happy and pleased we were able to get one.”
The league continues to see a rise in blocked kicks in Week 3 as the Chiefs’ special teams continue to push for that moment each game.
