ALLEN PARK — The Detroit Lions opened the week of practice with a walkthrough on Wednesday.
A walkthrough means the practice report consists of estimated participation designations. The Lions listed left tackle Taylor Decker (shoulder), edge rusher Al-Quadin Muhammad (knee), safety Daniel Thomas (forearm) and running back Sione Vaki (groin) as non-participants.
Linebacker Derrick Barnes (knee) was a limited participant. And cornerback D.J. Reed (cramping) was a full participant. Reed also dropped the knee injury designation that made him questionable for Monday Night Football’s win over the Baltimore Ravens.
The new additions to track here are Muhammad and Barnes.
Decker has been working through a shoulder injury in recent weeks. The veteran left tackle has played the last two games despite the issue, and the offensive line play has continued to improve. Decker has looked great, too. He was the second-best graded tackle in the NFL for his work in Week 3.
Vaki exited in the first half and did not return due to a groin injury. He’s been hampered by hamstring injuries since the start of training camp, too. The Lions did not have a concrete update on his status after they got back to Allen Park on Tuesday.
Muhammad received a game ball for his showing against the Ravens on Monday night. He posted 2.5 sacks, leading the way for a defense that got to Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson a whopping seven times. The knee injury is something to watch this week, because the Lions are thin on the edges with Marcus Davenport on injured reserve.
On the bright side, Reed was estimated as a full participant. He worked through a knee issue last week, managing to play in his usual role as a starting outside cornerback. The knee injury is gone from the practice report, with cramping listed on Wednesday’s estimated practice report.
Barnes missed most of last season with a serious knee injury. But the fact that he was at least limited to open the week is a good sign before the Cleveland Browns come to Detroit for a Week 4 showdown.
