Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman receives massive extension

Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman receives massive extension - Yahoo Sports

The Dallas Cowboys extended offensive guard Tyler Smith on Friday. The deal is reportedly a four-year contract worth upwards of $96 million with $80 million guaranteed. With the guaranteed money that is built into Smith’s contract, he has now signed the richest deal in NFL history for an offensive guard. The average salary per year sits at $24 million.

The Cowboys have been busy during the summer with shelling out guaranteed money within contracts, as they have extended tight end Jake Ferguson, cornerback DaRon Bland, fullback Hunter Luepke, and, most recently, Tyler Smith.

Smith was a first-round pick out of Tulsa in the 2022 NFL Draft. Ultimately, Smith was drafted to play at the tackle position and started at left tackle for 16 games during his rookie year, but would switch positions during the 2023 season as the Cowboys thought that he would be better suited as a guard.

Dealing Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers freed up around $44 million in cap space, so the Cowboys are attempting to lock down a few players for a deep, perennial playoff run in the NFC.

Tyler Smith has been a fan favorite in Dallas, and coach Brian Schottenheimer has high praise for his new deal, saying, “Tyler, I think he’s the best guard in football,” Schottenheimer said Friday before the contract was finalized. “I don’t think I’m overselling him. I really think he is.”
