The Kansas City Chiefs have begun to take steps to reinforce the wide receiver position after the recent injury to WR Xavier Worthy in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Worthy suffered a dislocated shoulder just three offensive plays into the Week 1 loss in Brazil. On Monday, Chiefs HC Andy Reid said that Worthy was rehabbing the injury and that the team would be taking things âday-by-day.â Itâs unclear at this time whether Worthy will continue to rehab on the 53-man roster or if heâll be added to the teamâs injured reserve list. Heâs also not the only wide receiver dealing with an injury, as rookie WR Jalen Royals missed Week 1 with knee tendinitis. Then, of course, Rashee Rice has five more games of suspension time left to serve.
With seven receivers on the 53-man roster, the Chiefs opted to carry just a single wide receiver on their practice squad. Thatâs none other than WR Jimmy Holiday, who was an undrafted standout on both offense and special teams during the preseason after making the team as a tryout player. On Tuesday, the team added another familiar UDFA wideout to the practice squad, according to a report from KPRC2âs Aaron Wilson.

Chiefs bring back Baylor WR Hal Presley Jr. on the practice squad
Presley went undrafted out of Baylor and signed with the Buffalo Bills following the 2025 NFL Draft; however, he was released after their rookie minicamp. He joined the Chiefs ahead of their 2025 training camp and was with the team throughout training camp and the preseason. The 23-year-old receiver had 81 receptions for 1,048 yards and seven touchdowns in 39 games during his four-year college career with the Bears. He played at Baylor while Chiefs WR Tyquan Thornton was there. During the preseason in Kansas City, over the course of games against the Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks, and Chicago Bears, Presley had two receptions on five targets for 20 yards on 29 offensive snaps. He also had 1.5 tackles on 19 special teams snaps during that span.
This move probably wonât excite Chiefs fans like a trade would, but itâs a wise move to reinforce the depth at the bottom of the roster with a player who knows the system on offense and special teams. Itâs also about having enough bodies to run the scout team offense as the team deals with injuries and absences at the receiver position.
Itâs unclear at this time what the corresponding move is to make room for Presley on the practice squad. The NFLâs personnel notice for Tuesday did not include Presleyâs signing, which isnât too uncommon, as the team will not resume practice for Week 2 vs. the Philadelphia Eagles until Wednesday, Sept. 10.
