The Detroit Lions have reportedly locked up wide receiver Jameson Williams for the long haul.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Lions and Williams have agreed to a three-year, $83 million contract extension that includes $67 million guaranteed.
At an annual average of $27.6 million, Williams’ contract extension ranks 13th among NFL wide receivers. The former first-round pick is now under contract through the 2029 season.
Williams’ extension comes after a season in which he tallied career-highs in receiving yards (1,001) and touchdowns (eight, seven receiving) in 15 games.
Earlier in the offseason, general manager Brad Holmes made it sound like a Williams extension was up in the air, but clearly the Lions have seen enough to keep the young wide receiver around for the long haul.
“We’re still taking it as it goes,” Holmes said during the league meetings. “Look, his fifth-year option, it’s looking likely that we’ll just pick that up, but in terms of extension, again, there’s a lot of extensions that are hopefully coming.
“It’s just one that you just don’t know what’s going to happen from a financial standpoint, because a wide receiver. It’s expensive. It’s very expensive.”
It definitely helped that Williams had a fantastic offseason.
Head coach Dan Campbell and the coaching staff has been hyping him up as a result and the belief is that the Alabama product could be even better in 2025.
“So the sky’s the limit for him. He’s exactly where we want him to be right now at this point. He’s been here, he’s grinding, he’s getting better. Scottie (Montgomery, Lions WR coach) is freakin’ grinding him,” he said of Williams. “It’s awesome. But we expect him to have a huge season. We really do, man. He’s going to be one of these guys that we’re going to lean on this year and is really going to be big for us. All he’s got to do is just keep working like he’s working, and we’ll be good.”
If Williams continues his ascension, this deal is going to look like a steal when it first kicks in during the 2027 campaign.
For now, Williams will look to deliver on the hype starting with a Week 1 game against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau.
