Coach Reid, Chiefs talk Week 1 loss in Brazil: ‘Wasn’t good enough’

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — While expectations were high among Kansas City Chiefs fans heading into Friday night’s Week 1 game in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the Chiefs would end up falling flat.

While wide receiver Xavier Worthy went down with a shoulder injury just three plays into his sophomore season, it was clear the Los Angeles Chargers were playing with more intensity. According to Head Coach Andy Reid, part of that problem was on his end.

“We can learn from this as we move forward, which I’ve got to make sure I get my team in a better state there coming out, playing with more emotion,” Coach Reid said.

“We were a little flat that first half, and that cost us.”

As far as Worthy’s injury goes, the team won’t know the severity of the injury or how long the young wideout will be sidelined until returning home and completing MRIs. Nevertheless, the injury isn’t good for the Chiefs’ offense with Rashee Rice out with a suspension till Week 7.

While the Chiefs’ passing game picked up a bit in the second half, the hole the Chiefs had dug themselves in proved to be too much. Reid said getting off to a better start would’ve been the difference.

“I thought it was like a two-halves passing game. I think the first half we were off a bit. And then the second half it picked up a little bit,” he said.

“We had a few more explosives there and got into better rhythm than what we had there. We’ve got to, again, I’ve got to make sure we start faster.”

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes echoed a similar statement, saying, “It wasn’t good enough,” when asked about the Chiefs’ performance.

“I think, just in general, they came out with more energy than we did — their defense and our offense. So, we didn’t execute. I missed some throws down the field. And obviously we didn’t play good enough in the first half,” he continued.

While the loss stings in Chiefs Kingdom, the Chiefs have little time to mend their wounds before returning to Arrowhead Stadium to take on the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, September 14.

Mahomes said that the team will be counting on him and the other Chiefs leaders heading into Week 2.

“It’s not going to be any easier,” he said.

“That’s a good football team that we’re playing against next week. I think we should have a great week of practice, come in with the right mindset. The leaders on the team need to step up.”
