Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has opportunity to break multiple NFL records in Week 1 matchup vs. Chargers

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15) celebrates toward fans against the Chicago Bears during the first half of the game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

It seems like Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has the opportunity to break another record in every game he plays.

He already owns many, and could get a couple more during his Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers on Friday night in São Paulo, Brazil. Let’s take a look at what they are, which were revealed by the NFL Communications page.

Patrick Mahomes can pass Peyton Manning for most TD passes by a player in his first nine seasons

Manning, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021, currently owns the NFL record for the most touchdown passes by a player in his first nine seasons with 293.

Mahomes is sitting at 291 as he enters just his eighth season, so he’ll obviously break the record eventually even if he doesn’t do it on Friday.

It’s important to note that this record includes TD passes thrown in both the regular season and the postseason. Also above Mahomes is New York Giants QB Russell Wilson, who had 292 through his first nine seasons.

Patrick Mahomes can pass Dan Marino for most regular season TD passes by a player under the age of 30

Unlike the record above, this is strictly to do with the regular season, and it’s another one that Mahomes is all but guaranteed to break.

His matchups against the Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2 will be his only chances before he turns 30, but fortunately he is already tied with Marino at 245.

That gives Mahomes two games to throw just one TD pass, which is highly likely to happen. Marino ultimately ended up with 420 TD passes throughout his 17-year career, ranking seventh in NFL history.

If Mahomes plays for at least that amount of time, he is on pace for 510, which would place him fourth all time. Keep in mind that he didn’t throw a TD pass during his rookie year (2017) as he played in just one game that season.
