Lions QB Jared Goff Gets Historic News That Should Thrill Detroit

The Detroit Lions are inching ahead to their season opener, and they’ll kick off their regular season against the Green Bay Packers at Ford Field on Sunday, September 7, 2025, at 4:25 p.m. Eastern time. This year will mark a crucial year for the Lions, since they’re coming off two solid seasons of the kind of records that most NFL teams which they could accomplish.

The Lions are often referred to as one of the strongest teams in the NFL for the 2025-26 season, so there’s a lot banking on this team, and expectations are high. For Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff, those expectations are even higher, after his record-breaking season last year.

Unfortunately, the Lions lost in a surprise way to the Washington Commanders for their first game in the playoffs last season. Goff didn’t have his best game that night, but those moments have likely been haunting him, and the team, and will motivate them this time around. Now, Goff is enjoying a big moment as he gears up for the new season.

Congratulations to Jared Goff of the Detroit Lions

The last time a Lions quarterback made the cut for the NFL’s Top 100 Players tally, it was Matthew Stafford. He came in at No. 31 in 2017 and 2018, which was his highest spot on the tally with Detroit.

Now, Goff has made historic news by being named the No. 15 best player in the NFL on their annual roster. It feels good to see him get this kind of respect.

“The Lions have flipped 180 degrees from the bottom of the barrel to darlings of the league and Super Bowl contenders in just the last few years, and the arrival of Goff has been a big reason why,” Coral Smith of the NFL notes in an August 25 feature. “In 2024, his ninth year in the league, Goff was one of the best quarterbacks around, ranking top-five in completion percentage, passing yards and touchdowns.”

Smith adds that Goff “spearheaded Detroit’s No. 1-ranked offense to the tune of a franchise record 15 wins and a second straight NFC North crown after having never done so before the 2023 season.” Of course, she adds that the team still has to get to the Super Bowl, even with the loss of Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, “but the evidence indicates Goff remains an elite QB even as he gets ready to hit a decade in the NFL.”

Amon-Ra St. Brown also made the cut, and he’s at No. 20. On St. Brown, Smith fays that “it was St. Brown who led the team’s receiving corps to great success and a No. 2 ranking.”

She adds that St. Brown “had almost double the catches of any other Lions player and finished top-five in the league in receptions, yards and touchdowns, earning his third Pro Bowl berth and second first-team All-Pro nod.”

It’s fantastic to see both Goff and St. Brown make this prestigious tally. Having two of the top 20 best player in the NFL with the Lions should make everyone in the Motor City pumped. You didn’t see this kind of thing in the 1990s (except for Barry Sanders) or even 2000s, so it appears 2025 could be the year of the Lion.
