The Detroit Lions have found an answer in the backup quarterback debate, with Kyle Allen making it clear he was the better option. In truth, this isn’t much of an accomplishment, as Hendon Hooker has consistently turned the ball over and looked as if the moment was still too big for the Detroit quarterback. With this in mind, it seems incredibly unlikely that the Lions are going to carry three quarterbacks on the active roster. Unless the franchise makes a move, it will be Jared Goff and Allen surviving final cuts.

Hooker is going to be easy to re-sign to the team’s practice squad based on the struggles throughout the preseason. Whether it is fumbling away the ball twice in the same game or missing clearly open receivers, the quarterback hasn’t done himself any favors as of late. This makes it impossible for the Lions to justify putting Hooker on the final roster.

It makes far more sense to either carry two quarterbacks or search for a possible upgrade in free agency or among other roster cuts. For Hooker, this shouldn’t be the end of his time in Detroit, with the quarterback having so much experience with the Lions. Re-signing Hooker to the practice squad makes sense for both sides.

Lions Quarterback Hendon Hooker Appears Destined to Become 2025 Roster Cut

Detroit could look at signing free agent Carson Wentz to give a bit more stability to the current depth chart. While Goff has been incredibly durable, if he were to miss more than a handful of snaps, the Lions lack a quarterback capable of giving them a puncher’s chance. Wentz would provide this and allow you to put Allen in the third quarterback role and relegate Hooker to the practice squad.

Even if the Lions don’t make another move at the position, this is where Hooker is going to end up by the end of next week. There isn’t going to be another team willing to bring in the struggling quarterback. Detroit remains interested only based on the quarterback’s experience within the offense and the few flashes he has shown throughout the past two years.

With this in mind, Detroit’s quarterback room appears to be set, with the only possible change coming if Hooker is able to have an incredible preseason finale. This is the only possible path that is going to change what is a clear roster cut and practice squad re-signing for the Lions.
