After getting crushed by the Los Angeles Chargers in the Hall of Fame game, the Detroit Lions got their preseason back on track with a matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.
In their second preseason outing, the Lions earned a 17-10 win over the Falcons.
While the game saw the Lions right the ship as a team, there was one player who couldn’t have had the game go much worse.
Hendon Hooker struggled for the second consecutive week and now could potentially be looking at losing his spot on the roster.
In a recent article projecting the Lions’ 53-man roster, Pride of Detroit’s Erik Schlitt and Jeremy Reisman predicted Hooker would be left off the final roster for the Lions.
Hooker was given a gift after the Hall of Fame Game. He didn’t play particularly well in the loss to the Chargers, completing three of six pass attempts for 18 yards and throwing an interception.
However, Kyle Allen was worse and performed badly enough to get himself demoted.
Hooker did not take advantage against the Falcons. He completed seven of 10 passes for 38 yards and ran for 27 more, but lost a pair of fumbles.
That got him benched and Allen actually was able to capitalize. He completed seven of eight passes for 120 yards and threw a couple of touchdown passes.
Now he appears to be in the driver’s seat of this backup QB competition and that could leave Hooker in a tough spot on the team’s roster bubble.
While he is only in his third NFL season, Hooker is 27 years old. If he hasn’t gotten to the level of being a backup QB by the end of this preseason then there isn’t much reason to believe it’s ever going to happen.
If Hooker’s play doesn’t improve significantly over the next two weeks then Allen is going to end up with the backup QB job and it would surprising for Hooker to make the final roster for the Lions.
