The Kansas City Chiefs have unveiled their second unofficial depth chart of the preseason, and there are very few changes from the first iteration released at the start of August. In fact, after the Chiefs played their first game against the Arizona Cardinals, a 20-17 loss at State Farm Stadium, the only differences are injury-related.
During the contest in Arizona, the Chiefs suffered a few injuries, but two of them were most notable for the sake of long-term roster planning. Safety Deon Bush suffered a torn Achilles tendon, and defensive end Janarius Robinson fractured his foot. Both were placed on injured reserve.
Bush has been removed from the depth chart after being placed on IR. Major Williams, a rookie free agent out of Carson-Newman, was elevated in his spot. The Chiefs later filled that slot on the 90-man roster with running back Michael Wiley.
The changes to the latest unofficial Chiefs depth chart are rather minimal.
Bush joined the Chiefs as a special teams out of Chicago back in 2022, and he’s remained a favorite of Dave Toub and a bit of security at safety when needed.
The Chiefs signed Robinson to a one-year deal in the spring in order to provide another veteran competitor at defensive end. The roster skewed rather young among players on the bubble, so adding Robinson made sense in a room with other prospects and younger options.
Robinson was a former fourth-round choice of the Minnesota Vikings who never found a place to play until he landed with the Los Angeles Raiders. Robinson appeared in 10 games last season, but was a rarely used rotational piece with his primary playing time on special teams.
In his place, the Chiefs now have Nate Matlack, a former Olathe East graduate who spent the majority of his collegiate career in the region at Kansas State. Last year, however, Matlack transferred to Pitt in order to earn more playing time and refine his game with hope that the NFL might come calling.
Perhaps another preseason game will change the depth chart a bit more. That time will come against the Seattle Seahawks on Friday, August 15 at 9:00 p.m. C.T.
