The Cleveland Browns currently have a four-man quarterback competition going on in training camp and preseason action. For now, it sure looks like veteran signal caller Joe Flacco will be the Week 1 starter barring a major surprise.
Shedeur Sanders received the team’s start in the preseason opener and looked very sharp. In addition, the Browns have liked what they have seen from both Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel.
It seems likely that Cleveland could have multiple different starting quarterbacks throughout the 2025 season. Gabriel, who has been nursing a hamstring injury, is hoping to make a push for playing time during his rookie year.
Unfortunately, the hamstring issue has caused Gabriel to miss valuable reps. He has also been unable to showcase his skill-set to potentially work his way up in the competition.
That being said, a very interesting new bit of news has been shared about the rookie signal caller.
Bruce Drennan, a popular media personality in Cleveland, spoke out with a strong revelation about Gabriel. He has heard that the former Oregon standout was looking strong early on in training camp before going down with the injury.
“I heard he was throwing the best in camp until he had the hamstring,” Drennan said.
Obviously, the Browns saw something that they really liked in Gabriel. They took him in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft with the No. 94 overall pick. Almost every projection before the draft had Gabriel falling to the sixth round at least.
During the 2024 college football season with the Ducks, Gabriel put together a strong year and led his team to the Rose Bowl. Unfortunately, they lost to the Ohio State Buckeyes, who went on to win the national championship.
Gabriel completed 72.9 percent of his passes for 3,857 yards, 30 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He also ran for 149 yards and scored seven more touchdowns on the ground.
Hopefully, the 24-year-old quarterback is able to get back on the field in the near future. If he can do that and pick up where he left off, Gabriel might just have a chance to get on the field soon rather than later.
It will be interesting to see what the next few weeks have in store for Gabriel. After that, his goal will be to take over as the starter at some point during the regular season.
