Updated 53-man roster projection with surprises and takeaways after the Packers’ first preseason game in 2025

The Green Bay Packers lost 30-10 to the New York Jets on Saturday, but there’s plenty of positives as well in regards to evaluating the roster. This week, the team will have a joint practice with the Indianapolis Colts, but the starters are not expected to play on Saturday. So right now is the perfect moment for an update on the 53-man roster projection.

Quarterbacks (2)

  • In: Jordan Love, Malik Willis
  • Out: Sean Clifford, Taylor Elgersma

Elgersma probably showed more talent than Clifford in the first preseason game, but not enough for a roster spot. The Canadian has two weeks to beat his competitor for a practice squad spot.

Running backs (4)

  • In: Josh Jacobs, Emanuel Wilson, MarShawn Lloyd, Chris Brooks
  • Out: Amar Johnson, Jalen White, Israel Abanikanda

Amar Johnson had a strong performance and scored a touchdown against the Jets. It should get him more playing time over the next two weeks, and that will determine his fate. MarShawn Lloyd’s health may also be a factor here.

Wide receivers (6)

  • In: Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks, Matthew Golden, Savion Williams, Mecole Hardman
  • Out: Malik Heath, Julian Hicks, Cornelius Johnson, Samuel Brown, Will Sheppard, Isaiah Neyor
  • PUP: Christian Watson

Mecole Hardman is not a lock after his poor performance on Saturday, with a drop on offense and a muffed punt on special teams. The Packers will still give him some opportunities, and he will have to show his worth. Malik Heath also had a difficult game with two drops, so the competition for the final spot might be more open than initially expected.

Tight ends (3)

  • In: Tucker Kraft, Luke Musgrave, John FitzPatrick
  • Out: Ben Sims, Messiah Swinson, Johnny Lumpkin

The battle between FitzPatrick and Sims will be a notable one throughout training camp. Sims is probably a better offensive player and had a bigger role in 2024, but FitzPatrick is a better special teamer—and this final spot will reasonably come down to this.

Offensive line (9)

  • In: Rasheed Walker, Aaron Banks, Elgton Jenkins, Sean Rhyan, Zach Tom, Jordan Morgan, Anthony Belton, Donovan Jennings, Jacob Monk
  • Out: Lecitus Smith, Kadeem Telfort, Trey Hill, Tyler Cooper, Brant Banks, J.J. Lippe
  • PUP: John Williams
  • Injured reserve: Travis Glover

With Travis Glover out for the season, the Packers will probably carry nine offensive linemen and not 10. There are seven locks, and the final two spots would likely go to Donovan Jennings and Jacob Monk now—but Monk in particular had a tough game, so a veteran presence like Lecitus Smith, added last week, creates real competition.

Defensive tackles (6)

  • In: Kenny Clark, Devonte Wyatt, Karl Brooks, Warren Brinson, Nazir Stackhouse, Colby Wooden
  • Out: James Ester, Keith Randolph Jr.

Nazir Stackhouse shined in the preseason game and received praise from defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley due to his importance to stop the run. He’s the perfect replacement for TJ Slaton, and it seems like he will make the team as an undrafted rookie. But Colby Wooden showed signs of improvement as well, being stronger and playing more at nose. So there’s a real scenario for the Packers to keep six interior defensive linemen.

Edges (6)

  • In: Rashan Gary, Lukas Van Ness, Kingsley Enagbare, Barryn Sorrell, Brenton Cox Jr., Collin Oliver
  • Out: Arron Mosby, Deslin Alexandre

It’s tough to keep six edges, but Collin Oliver is an off-ball linebacker hybrid. If the Packers want to cut one more player from his list, it will be a battle between former starter Kingsley Enagbare and promising Brenton Cox. Oliver isn’t healthy yet, so that’s something to monitor.

Linebackers (4)

  • In: Edgerrin Cooper, Quay Walker, Isaiah McDuffie, Ty’Ron Hopper
  • Out: Isaiah Simmons, Kristian Welch, Jamon Dumas-Johnson, Jared Bartlett

Isaiah Simmons was added after the draft and seemed bound for a roster spot. However, the Packers gave him all the chances and it didn’t look good against the Jets. Because Collin Oliver and Kitan Oladapo are a hybrid players, Green Bay could carry only four off-ball linebackers and still have enough depth. Moreover, Kristian Welch could be a practice squad option this year after being signed to the Denver Broncos’ 53-man roster in 2024.

Cornerbacks (5)

  • In: Keisean Nixon, Nate Hobbs, Carrington Valentine, Bo Melton, Kalen King
  • Out: Micah Robinson, Kamal Hadden, Corey Ballentine, Johnathan Baldwin, Isaiah Dunn, Tyron Herring, Garnett Hollis

Brian Gutekunst doesn’t like to cut draft picks, but he has done it from time to time with seventh-rounders, so Robinson is not a lock. Outside of the three starters, everything is on the table. Melton didn’t play late in the Jets game, an indication that he has a bigger role. Last year’s seventh-rounder Kalen King had a strong performance.

Safeties (5)

  • In: Xavier McKinney, Evan Williams, Javon Bullard, Zayne Anderson, Kitan Oladapo
  • Out: Omar Brown, Kahzir Brown

Zayne Anderson got injured, but it’s not a long-term issue. Omar Brown has had a strong camp, but not enough to surpass Anderson and Oladapo up to this point.

Special teamers (3)

  • In: Brandon McManus, Daniel Whelan, Matthew Orzech
  • Out: Mark McNamee

The Packers kept all their three special teamers, re-signing McManus and Whelan. Mark McNamee is a part of the International Pathway Program, so the plan is to get him back on the practice squad with a roster exemption.
