Here’s the Green Bay Packers’ running back depth chart amid injuries to two players during training camp

Packers roster 2025: Running back depth chart tested in training camp

The Green Bay Packers have one of the best running backs in the game in Josh Jacobs.

He’ll again carry a heavy load for the Packers offense in 2025. But even the biggest workhorses need some relief now and again.

And right now, the players backing him up on the Packers’ running back depth chart aren’t seeing the field during training camp due to injuries.

The good news is that there is still a month before the start of the regular season for MarShawn Lloyd and Emanuel Wilson to get healed up. Plus, there’s optimism that they’ll be back soon. The bad news is they’re still missing reps on the practice field during an important time for young players.

Here’s a look at the Packers’ running back depth chart with the team’s first preseason game this week:

Packers depth chart: Running backs

  • Josh Jacobs: Pro Bowl running back is back for his second year with the Packers and ready for another big season. Year 1 in Green Bay couldn’t have gone any better. Jacobs, 27, is coming off a monster season when he posted a career-high 15 touchdowns. He set a Packers record for most consecutive games with a rushing touchdown when he had at least one TD each game across Weeks 11-18. Finished with 1,329 yards, the second most in a season in his six-year career. His 301 total carries were the second-most of his career.
  • Emanuel Wilson: Should be the Packers backup running back again. The 26-year-old contributed to the Packers’ strong rushing attack last year in his second season in the league with 103 carries and 502 yards. Wilson played in all 17 games in 2024. He injured his knee during practice on Aug. 1 and hasn’t returned. But the former undrafted free agent who burst onto the scene in training camp 2023 doesn’t expect to be out long.
  • MarShawn Lloyd: The 24-year-old is hoping for a restart of sorts in his second year after missing nearly all of his rookie season. Lloyd, the Packers’ 2024 third-round draft selection out of USC, experienced several injuries starting in training camp last year and ended up playing in just one game. And he’s again not available in a critical training camp for him. He suffered a groin injury at practice July 28 and is listed as “day to day.”
  • Chris Brooks: He’s in his second year with the Packers after joining the organization’s practice squad before the start of 2024 season. The 25-year-old scored his first touchdown of his career during the Packers’ Week 16 win over the New Orleans Saints on Dec. 23, 2024. Third-year RB played in 15 games and finished with 36 carries for 183 yards. Before signing with the Packers last year, he was with the Miami Dolphins.

Other running backs on the Packers’ depth chart in their first training camp with the team are as follows:

  • Amar Johnson, 22 years old, 5-feet-10, 205 pounds, rookie, South Dakota State – Signed as an undrafted free agent after the 2025 NFL Draft.
  • Jalen White, 23 years old, 6-feet, 205 pounds, rookie, Georgia Southern – Signed as an undrafted free agent after the 2025 NFL Draft.
  • Israel Abanikanda, 22 years old, 5-feet-10, 217 pounds, three years experience, Pittsburgh – Signed with the Packers on July 25 after he was waived by the San Francisco 49ers. Former fifth-round pick by the New York Jets.

Packers injury report

The Packers’ No. 2 and No. 3 running backs – Emanuel Wilson and MarShawn Lloyd – have been battling injuries over the last week, leading to missed training camp practices, including the team’s Family Night on Aug. 2.

Wilson has a bone bruise after crashing to the field when he was attempting to adjust his body on an overthrown pass from Jordan Love in practice. Wilson thought he tore his ACL but further evaluation revealed it wasn’t as serious as initially feared.

Lloyd is battling a groin injury, the latest setback in a career that has been snake bitten by injuries thus far. He battled hamstring and hip injuries during last year’s training camp and then an ankle injury cost him significant time in the first half of the season. Lloyd’s season was then over after he needed to undergo emergency appendectomy surgery in mid-November.

Packers roster

If Wilson and Lloyd miss more time, including preseason games, that will open up opportunities for other young running backs on the Packers roster to make an impression.

It was Wilson who made the most of his time on the field two years ago during the preseason. Will any of the players deep on the running back depth chart have breakout showings?

They’ll get their first shot on Saturday, Aug. 9, against the New York Jets. The Packers then have two more preseason games.

After that, the team must have rosters down to 53 players by Tuesday, Aug. 26.

Is AJ Dillon on the Packers?

No, AJ Dillon is no longer a member of the Green Bay Packers.

The Packers fan favorite departed in free agency alter he missed all of the 2024 season with a neck injury.

Dillon, who spent five seasons with the Packers, signed a one-year deal with the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.

Dillon rushed for 2,428 yards on 597 carries and 16 touchdowns for the Packers.

The 26-year-old was a second-round draft pick by the Packers in 2020 and the man known as Quadzilla quickly became a popular player in the community for his engaging personality and especially his love of all things Door County.

On the field, he would form a dynamic rushing duo with Aaron Jones.

A neck stinger late in the 2023 season was the start of the end for Dillon in Green Bay.
