Despite putting an end to the Shemar Stewart contract debacle, the Cincinnati Bengals remain embroiled in a standoff with star defensive end Trey Hendrickson.
After not reporting to training camp, Hendrickson recently gave a very honest interview about his problems with the Bengals and their contract offer.
Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda has followed that up with new reporting:
“There have been reports that Hendrickson is looking for two years guaranteed in his contract while Cincinnati is only offering one, yet sources tell me the pass rusher is looking for a deal that will include guarantees for three years, at which point he’ll have been in the league 11 seasons.”
Guarantees beyond the first year of the new contract have long been the reported issue. What’s interesting here is whether Hendrickson’s side would really push for guarantees into the third year.
The Bengals didn’t blink with the Stewart contract standoff, but Hendrickson’s camp seems intent on seeing if they will here, anyway. And that has some merit: How long can a win-now team with an open window refuse to give one of the best pass-rushers in the NFL what he wants?
Hendrickson is already 30 years old and offering guarantees well into his mid-30s could be a big risk. But failing to find common ground even into Year 2 of the possible extension could be hurting both parties right now.
