The New England Patriots were one of the most active teams this offseason. They used free agency and the NFL draft to add playmakers to both sides of the ball.
One of the biggest focuses was on surrounding Drake Maye with protection and pass catchers. With training camp around the corner, there are multiple guys who are already paying dividends. The Pats drafted WR Kyle Williams with the 69th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, and he wasted no time impressing his new team.
Kyle Williams Already Got Off on the Right Foot
They signed Stefon Diggs to a three-year, $69 million contract in free agency, but he’s still rehabbing his way back from a torn ACL. Besides Diggs, there is no one on the roster who has their spot on the depth chart locked up.
During OTAs, Williams was impressive, per Alex Barth of 98.5 The Sports Hub. He said, “Williams made his presence felt during practice, and seemed especially involved running routes outside the numbers. His highlight play came on a deep out when he created significant separation and caught a pass from Maye.”
The Washington State product’s speed and separation abilities flashed, and he even made a highlight grab. With cornerback Miles Battle in coverage, Williams adjusted to make an over-the-shoulder grab.
His positive trajectory continued in minicamp, as his play stood out. Williams continued to stretch the field when backup quarterback Josh Dobbs connected with him on a 40-plus-yard completion in between two safeties.
Even though he’s just participated in spring practices, multiple writers have called out Williams for his skills that are flashing on the field. In 50 collegiate games, he racked up 248 catches for 3,609 receiving yards and 29 touchdowns.
His ability to be a downfield weapon was well known, but being a better route runner than anticipated is a major plus for a New England offense that needs quality playmakers for Maye’s second season.
Rookies report to Gillette Stadium on July 19, and the 22-year-old will be able to build off a successful spring. With the passing attack in desperate need of improvement, Williams is already paying off for New England.
