Travis Kelce still haunted by the Super Bowl loss where Nick Sirianni’s Eagles made Mahomes and the Chiefs suffer

A wound that hasn’t fully healed

When February 9, 2025, arrived, many predicted the Kansas City Chiefs would once again bring home a Super Bowl title-this time in Super Bowl LIX. But what unfolded on the field at the Caesar Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, against the Philadelphia Eagles, became a story that neither Nick Sirianni’s squad, Travis Kelce, nor even Patrick Mahomes have been able to forget-especially with just two months to go before the 2025 NFL season kicks off.

Reliving the pain of Super Bowl LIX

In an appearance on the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast hosted by Taylor Lewan earlier this week, Travis Kelce reflected on just how painful that game was-not only emotionally, but also in how thoroughly the Chiefs were dominated by an Eagles team that came in with a flawless game plan. They shut down Patrick Mahomes, Kelce himself, and virtually the entire Kansas City offense, leaving them helpless on the field.

The yardage in the first half was tough… Didn’t get a whole lot better… Not trying to be disrespectful, but at what point were you like, ‘Okay, we’re not going to be able to pull this one out?

Kelce responded:

I don’t know if that ever came in my mind. It was always just keep fu— fighting and see what happens. But at the same time, it got ugly quick. That wasn’t too fun when they yanked their DBs out, or their, like, big guys on defense. I was just like, ‘F– man, I know what that sign is’. At that point, it’s like you’re still trying to… you’re in the mode of… fight-just give your guys and your coaches everything you got, and it just wasn’t going our way.

That night, Mahomes was sacked six times, and Philadelphia’s defense delivered a dominant performance. Kelce acknowledged:

I’ll give credit man, those from the D-line to the linebackers to the defensive backs-everywhere on that football field, they had guys flying around.

To drive the point home, Kelce added:

I don’t know if they had a tick on what was going on or if they just kind of had the rules set in place but it felt like in the run game and pass game… they just had stuff figured out. And even the stuff that they… even when we got the right call, it was like we were just a step off or timing off… Pat was under duress and we just had to try and figure things out on the run. It was just an uphill battle all fu— day

That night was filled with sadness, pain, and tears for the Chiefs. And just like Kelce, Patrick Mahomes hasn’t been able to move on either.

A frustration Mahomes and Kelce share

What the Chiefs endured in Super Bowl LIX-where they were completely overwhelmed by a dominant and motivated Eagles defense-left a lasting impression. Recently, Mahomes opened up about it in a conversation with T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert on Sidekicks Conversations.

I’m going to leave everything I have on that football field. And even if you look back at the Super Bowl, I mean, we were getting blown out. There’s no way around it.

Thankfully, the quarterback is turning that pain into motivation.

We’re feeling very excited,”… “You know, last year didn’t end the way we wanted to. But we took a lot of great things from it. And, having all those young guys on our team, they’re hungry. They’re ready to go. And our goal is to go out there and win the Super Bowl this year.

Mahomes told the host.

Both Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes are determined to return to the big stage in the 2025 season-though the road ahead will be filled with formidable challenges in both conferences.
