The Cleveland Browns made a roster move Thursday that raised a few eyebrows but had long been anticipated. Edge rusher Ogbo Okoronkwo, who signed with the franchise just two offseasons ago, was officially released after two underwhelming seasons in the orange and brown.
The move came down to a combination of production, finances and roster direction.
By releasing Okoronkwo, the Browns will save approximately $3.4 million in cap space, a significant figure for a team continuing to fine-tune its defensive core. But despite the timing, the separation between player and team appears to be an amicable one.
Okoronkwo acknowledged his departure with a simple yet respectful post on social media: “Love to the land!”
Browns move forward after revamping edge room with Tryon and mega deal for Garrett
Okoronkwo originally joined the Browns during the 2023 offseason, inking a three-year deal that was intended to help bolster a pass rush that has heavily leaned on All-Pro edge rusher Myles Garrett. Coming off a breakout year in Houston in 2022, where he notched five sacks and flashed strong pressure numbers, Okoronkwo was expected to be a complementary force across from Garrett.
However, that promise didn’t fully materialize in Cleveland. Over the span of two seasons, Okoronkwo totaled 7.5 sacks, a solid, but not spectacular, figure given his role and expectations. The Browns, hoping to challenge in the ultra-competitive AFC North, fell short of those aspirations, and changes were inevitable.
The writing may have been on the wall when the Browns pursued former Buccaneers first-rounder Joe Tryon-Shoyinka in free agency. The team not only brought in another young, talented edge rusher to compete for snaps, but also locked in Garrett with a massive contract extension, cementing his place as the centerpiece of Cleveland’s defensive front.
The reshuffle in personnel made it increasingly difficult for Okoronkwo to justify his spot on the depth chart, particularly with a notable price tag still attached. In the end, financial flexibility and future potential won out.
The former Oklahoma Sooner didn’t leave without generating a little offseason controversy, though. Just weeks prior to his release, Okoronkwo found himself under scrutiny from fans after he was spotted liking an Instagram post that criticized Myles Garrett‘s absence from portions of the team’s 2025 organized team activities (OTAs).
Although it’s unclear whether the incident played any role in his departure, it did stir tension among fans and highlight the complex dynamics within the locker room.
Still, the edge defender showed class with his parting words, choosing to honor his time in Cleveland instead of stoking further speculation.
