Ahead of the Pack? Matt LaFleur's Play-Caller Ranking Revealed

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur flexed his schematic genius throughout the 2024 NFL season after quarterback Jordan Love sustained an injury in the season opening loss at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Well, LaFleur’s performance last year under tricky circumstances combined with his impressive resume of offensive production during his time in Green Bay has led to him receiving a

PFSN Ranks Matt LaFleur Inside the Top 5 Play-Callers in the NFL Entering 2025 Season

Brandon Austin from Pro Football & Sports Network (PFSN) recently ranked all of the play-callers in the league ahead of the 2025 NFL season, where Packers head coach Matt LaFleur took the fifth spot.

Austin wrote, “Matt LaFleur has quietly reaffirmed his place among the NFL’s top play-callers, thanks to a 2024 campaign that showcased his flexibility and schematic creativity. The Packers finished eighth in Offense+ and 11th in offensive EPA per play despite fielding the youngest offense in the league and having Malik Willis under center early in the year.”

The EPA numbers speak to some of the more standard numbers you are used to hearing to quantify a team’s offensive success.

Green Bay ranked inside the top 10 teams in the league in scoring offense (8th), total offense (7th), and rushing offense (6th).

When you factor in Jordan Love’s injury early in the season, one could make an argument that LaFleur should actually rank even higher than 5th on this list.

Austin added, “LaFleur adapted to a limited QB situation, then transitioned to a more aggressive system once Jordan Love returned. His nuanced run-game design helps set him apart, while LaFleur’s system also channels Love’s volatility into a productive and often explosive attack.”

The addition of Josh Jacobs certainly had a positive impact on the rushing offense with his 1,329 rushing yards and 15 rushing scores to go with an additional 36 receptions for 342 receiving yards and one receiving score.

LaFleur leaned heavily on the rushing attack with Jacobs alone seeing 301 carries in 2024, which made him one of just six backs that finished over 300 rushing attempts last season.

The fact Green Bay went 2-0 with Malik Willis as the starting quarterback is proof LaFleur can build an offensive game plan around multiple signal callers with vastly different skillsets and find success in the win column.

What are the Expectations for the Packers Offense in 2025?

The Packers offense is a tough projection given Love’s slight regression and the lack of a proven go-to receiver.

Austin concluded, “While it’s not the juggernaut of the Aaron Rodgers era, Green Bay has now posted back-to-back top-eight finishes in Offense+. With their young weapons developing and Love showing real promise, LaFleur’s offense is ascending.”

The addition of Matthew Golden out of Texas could finally give this offense a true WR1 for the first time since the days of Davante Adams. Yet, that is far from a certainty with a rookie entering the league.

Savion Williams is another potentially dynamic addition to this offense out of TCU, who is an explosive playmaker in the manufactured touch game — which is the type of role we have seen from Jayden Reed over the last few years.

Ultimately, the offense will largely depend on Love returning to his 2023 form and Golden making an instant impact.

If both of those factors break favorably for Green Bay, then the Packers offense could fall among the elite producing groups in the league in 2025.
