The Kansas City Chiefs have their eyes on reclaiming the Lombardi Trophy this season, but they’ll need to fend off a loaded conference to get there. The AFC should be strong again next season as a gauntlet of franchise quarterbacks including Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen are on the Chiefs’ schedule. To have success, they’ll also have to battle some talented rosters that are looking to make their push for a championship.

To that point, the offseason has been a game of chess to sabotage each opponent. The Chiefs did well to slap the franchise tag on Trey Smith to take one of the best guards off the free agent market, but they couldn’t stop one of their rivals from making a key addition last week.

Chiefs Had Interest in Jaire Alexander Before He Signed with Ravens

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Chiefs were interested in free agent Jaire Alexander before he signed with the Baltimore Ravens last week. The former All-Pro was released by the Green Bay Packers on June 9 and Fowler added that other teams may have offered Alexander more money to sign. But in the end he found he had “a quick-forming chemistry” with the Ravens.

It makes sense that the Chiefs would be interested in Alexander’s services. The 28-year-old has posted a Pro Football Grade over 70 in each of his six seasons in the NFL and made the Pro Bowl in 2020 and 2022. Unfortunately, his career took a turn in 2021 as he’s missed 34 games due to injury or suspension over the past four seasons.

Still, teams were willing to take a bet on his talent. The Chiefs are in need of some extra cornerback depth with Trent McDuffie and Kristian Fulton locked into starting roles. While Jaylen Watson is also slated to start after last year’s injury-plagued campaign, adding Alexander could have given Kansas City an extra layer to get through the grind of the season.

Ultimately, Alexander may have been seeking the most comfortable situation after his fall out in Green Bay. The Ravens may have had an advantage with his Louisville teammate Jackson in the building and the two will look to topple the Chiefs when they visit Kansas City on Sept. 14.
