BREAKING : Questionable free agent signing might have earned a Patriots roster spot already

Las Vegas Raiders v Kansas City Chiefs

The Patriots entered the 2025 offseason with the most cap space to utilize in free agency, which was exactly what was needed, given the underwhelming nature of their roster. Mike Vrabel knew what he wanted to accomplish with the team in his first season and ensured they spent big-time money on some big-name players, most of whom were defensive talent.

One of the more under-the-radar signings was former first-rounder K’Lavon Chaisson, who spent the 2024 season with the Raiders. After spending four years with the Jaguars, the outside linebacker hoped to revitalize his career in Las Vegas, but he only stayed there for one season. He then signed a one-year deal with New England, which generated little excitement.

While that remains mostly true as the Patriots take a break from practice until training camp next month, one of the biggest standouts during OTAs and minicamp happened to be Chaisson, mostly due to consistently working with the starting unit.

Considering he had already been labeled a roster bubble player, it’s quite the development for him and the team’s defense that he impressed as much as he did in the spring.

K’Lavon Chaisson might be the missing piece on the Patriots defense

Among the list of players who garnered a lot of hype coming out of OTAs, Chaisson was one of the defenders reporters consistently spoke highly of.

Mark Daniels of MassLive even noted that he was part of dialing up the pass rush, and his performance might have already earned him a spot on the team’s 2025 roster, even if only as a rotational piece.

“As the Patriots dialed up their pass rush on Tuesday, it was notable how much K’Lavon Chaisson was on the field.

Drafted 20th overall by Jacksonville in 2020, Chaisson signed a 1-year deal with the Patriots this offseason after making a career-high five sacks in 2024 with Las Vegas. On Tuesday, he had a split sack on Maye along with Milton Williams.

Chaisson could be Harold Landry’s top backup but also has a chance to shine as a situational pass rusher for the Patriots.”

One of the Patriots’ biggest weaknesses last year, and even before then, was their pass rush, which only worsened after Jerod Mayo and Co. traded Matthew Judon and Joshua Uche. On top of that, the injuries to Christian Barmore and Ja’Whaun Bentley made it difficult for any defender to get to the quarterback, creating a massive hole on the defensive line for Vrabel to deal with this offseason.

Fortunately, it appears they have found the right players for the job by signing Chaisson, Harold Landry, and Milton Williams, all of whom have already proven to be impactful during just spring practices.

Chaisson must keep that performance going once the team heads back to Foxboro next month if he wants to ensure he makes the 2025 roster. Although they need as much help as they can get, his lack of connection to the coaching staff hinders him in ways that it doesn’t for his direct competition, who appear to be already considered starters.

He can secure a spot as a rotational piece by continuing to impress with his performance alongside those players and building upon what he accomplished with the Raiders last year. Chaisson could easily be a silent assassin for the Patriots’ defense this fall, which is exactly what they have long needed to regain their dominance as a unit.
