How realistic are those Trey Hendrickson to Detroit Lions rumors?

How realistic are those Trey Hendrickson to Detroit Lions rumors? - Yahoo Sports

While the national media and analysts haven’t exactly stopped the suggestions, it sounds like other teams have moved from the idea of trading for Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson.

Next to the fact that Lou Anarumo now coaches for the Indianapolis Colts, the Detroit Lions have been one of the most-suggested trade destinations for Hendrickson.

But as Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press pointed out recently, it’s just not a realistic suggestion:

“I haven’t gotten any indication the Lions are serious players to add Hendrickson. In fact, all signs point to the opposite. Hendrickson wants a contract that makes him one of the highest-paid edge rushers in the NFL, and that price point – $35 million annually? – doesn’t jibe with how the Lions are operating financially. They intend to pay Aidan Hutchinson, Gibbs and several more of their own draft picks and don’t have that kind of money allocated to a second defensive end.”

Any trade suggestions for Hendrickson were never that realistic. Not just because these are the Bengals, either. If they had been realistic, the team would’ve never broken character and given him a chance to seek a trade in the first place.

Hendrickson’s desire for a long-term, costly contract extension at the age of 30 prohibits a trade because the acquiring team would need to take that risk after meeting the trade price to acquire an All-Pro who just led the league in sacks.

The fact Hendrickson has had contract drama in each of the last few offseasons and threatened holdouts and signed a one-year deal recently makes it all the more complicated. All signs still point to him and the team coming together on something that makes sense, while teams like the Lions continue to look elsewhere.
