BREAKING NEWS : Former Lions Quarterback Still Unemployed as OTAs Arrive

Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell speaks during the NFL Scouting Combine at the Indiana Convention Center.

There are no question marks when it comes to the Detroit Lions’ starting quarterback in 2025. Jared Goff continues to be the perfect example of simply needing the right team and fit to reach his potential. However, there are reasons for questions when it comes to the team’s current backup options.

If Goff were to suffer any injury of note Hendon Hooker and Kyle Allen hardly inspire confidence. If general manager Brad Holmes is looking to add another signal-caller, Teddy Bridgewater came out of retirement to sign with the Lions at the end of 2024 and could be a name to keep an eye on.

Another former Lions quarterback who remains a free agent is Georgia product Jake Fromm. The former college star has struggled to maintain a backup role at the next level. Bouncing around the league, Fromm is best suited for an emergency quarterback role. At this point, that is the absolute ceiling for the limited QB.

Former Lions QB Jake Fromm Struggling to Find a Landing Spot During OTAs

If Fromm’s name looks familiar outside of his limited time with Detroit, it is likely due to his college days or an infamous play with the New York Giants. The quarterback was asked to QB sneak by the Giants on a third-and-long during Week 18 of the 2022 season, and the infamous play caught attention for being, arguably, one of the worst calls in franchise history.

On a more positive note, Fromm was a key piece of the early Kirby Smart era for the Georgia Bulldogs. The quarterback would help set the table for the team’s eventual back-to-back championship runs. The college veteran is fondly remembered in Georgia and might have to turn back to his college days for his next landing spot if he wants a role in football.

If Fromm’s career is going to continue, it is going to need to be under very specific circumstances. The former Detroit gunslinger needs to find a team willing to give him preseason reps, potentially allowing him to win an emergency quarterback role with a strong performance during training camp or the preseason.

This is Fromm’s one path to continuing his NFL career after the Lions have, evidently, moved on.
