The Kansas City Chiefs are the talk of the town, as they managed to keep their undefeated 2024 campaign alive with a late field goal block in their 16-14 win over the Denver Broncos. While they have a sparkling 9-0 record, ESPN’s Football Power Index rankings don’t appear to be all that high on the Chiefs currently.
While Kansas City has yet to lose a game, they aren’t exactly blowing their opponents out of the water, as seven of their nine victories have been by one score or fewer. There’s no doubt the team has done well to keep on winning, but they are only a few plays away from having a sub-.500 record.
The Chiefs may have the best record in the NFL, but that doesn’t mean that they are the best team in the league in the eyes of ESPN’s FPI ranking system. In fact, there are three teams ahead of them heading into Week 11, with the Detroit Lions, Baltimore Ravens, and Buffalo Bills coming in ahead of them.
This is a pretty surprising development, as typically speaking, the team with the best record should be considered the best team in the league. But the Chiefs are continuing to just barely scrape out victories, while teams like the Lions, Ravens, and Bills are beating their opponents in relatively convincing fashion.
The FPI rankings don’t mean much at the end of the day, but it goes to show that the Chiefs may not be as good as their 9-0 record suggests they are. Until they lose, though, they will be holding onto the title of the best team in the league, even if this list disagrees.
Kansas City’s undefeated season is certainly going to be put to the test in Week 11, as they have a daunting matchup against the Bills coming up that could see them lose their first game of the season.
