ALLEN PARK — Long gone are the days of the predictable 1 p.m. Sunday schedule for the Detroit Lions.
The Lions have a loaded prime-time and holiday schedule this year, not to mention a daunting road slate. They are set to play five prime-time games and are essentially living in the national spotlight.
For the first time since 1999, the Lions will also play on Thanksgiving and Christmas in the same season. They are also set for six 4:25 p.m. games in addition to the five prime-time contests.
While the Lions hoped to avoid playing on Christmas, they will be spending the holiday with the Minnesota Vikings, away from home. Netflix will broadcast that as part of its Christmas triple-header.
The Lions will host the Green Bay Packers in their annual Thanksgiving classic. Note that this game is set for 1 p.m. and not 12:30 p.m., unlike previous years.
They were also dealt the back-to-back Thursday treatment coming off Thanksgiving for the second consecutive year. Detroit will welcome the Dallas Cowboys for Thursday Night Football, and then get the long weekend break heading into its lone west-coast trip.
Ford Field will host two prime-time games this season. The first comes in Week 7 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football. The Lions-Bucs game is scheduled for 7 p.m. as part of an apparent doubleheader that night.
The road slate outside of the usual suspects from the NFC North includes Monday Night Football against Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens, Sunday Night Football in Kansas City, Sunday Night Football against the reigning Super Bowl champs in Philadelphia, and a trip to face Matthew Stafford in Los Angeles.
“This is a challenge,” Lions head coach Dan Campbell said of the road schedule at owners meetings. “We’re competitive, I’m competitive. So yeah, I love the thought of it, man. These are going to be outdoors, grass. I hope it rains, it’s mud, it’s everything, the whole deal. This is going to be a meat grinder, you know?”
On the bright side, the Lions don’t have a ton of miles to travel, with the trip to Los Angeles far and away the longest flight this season.
Thirty-two NFL teams will travel 625,947 miles this season. Here is the breakdown, via @billsperos: pic.twitter.com/WJ2sU5hrVG
