Lions OC offers bold prediction for WR Jameson Williams

Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams is coming off one of the best years of his career, but new offensive coordinator John Morton thinks he’ll reach new heights in 2025.

On Tuesday, Morton told the media the 24-year-old pass-catcher has been “unbelievable” this offseason and made a big prediction.

“I’m so excited to see him this year,” Morton said. “It’s going to be a breakout year for him. So, I can’t wait, man. I can’t wait.”

In 2024, Williams caught a career-high 58 passes for 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 regular-season games. An even better year from the WR would ensure Detroit’s passing attack keeps rolling, despite the departure of Ben Johnson. The former Lions OC became the Chicago Bears head coach in January.

It would also show that Detroit’s decision to keep the 12th pick of the 2022 NFL Draft was the right one.

Before the 2025 draft in April, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported Williams was a potential trade candidate. However, Lions general manager Brad Holmes said they never “entertained that idea.”

“[Williams] is still scratching the surface. I do think he’s got more in him as well,” Holmes said during the draft. “So I just think it just makes sense for us to do what we can to keep him around.”

Holmes and Co. then exercised the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, which keeps him under contract through the 2026 season. Now, it appears Williams is rewarding the team for its loyalty.

Williams has overcome a tumultuous start to his career. He played in 18 games in his first two seasons because of a four-game gambling suspension and injuries.

The WR’s continued growth could help the Lions rebound from an NFC divisional-round loss to the Washington Commanders and reach their first Super Bowl this upcoming season.
