BREAKING : Browns defensive end posts positive injury update

Alex Wright Browns

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Browns defensive line got another boost on Monday following the NFL draft — but this one comes from a player who was already in the building.

Defensive end Alex Wright, entering his fourth season, posted on his X account that he’s been “cleared,” after his 2024 season ended in October due to surgery on a torn triceps.

“Cleared (raising hands emoji),” Wright posted on his account. “Let’s get back to business (mischief emoji).”

Wright originally suffered the injury during joint practices with the Minnesota Vikings last August. He started noticing the pain in Week 2 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but managed to play the first four games of the season before requiring surgery on Oct. 3. The surgery was performed by Daniel E. Cooper, MD.

At the time, the Browns announced that Wright, 24, was expected to make a full recovery by the start of the 2025 season.

Wright, their third-round pick in 2022 out of UAB, finished third on the team with five sacks in 2023. He was off to another strong start in 2024 a sack and eight tackles.

The sack was one of the highlight plays for the season for Cleveland. It came in Week 2 against Jacksonville, when Wright took Trevor Lawrence down in the end zone for a safety with 1:44 to play, helping the Browns preserve an 18-13 win. He’s also batted down six passes in his NFL career so far.

The loss for the Browns was significant.

Browns Star Myles Garrett Delivers Big Injury Update

Wright was singled out by defensive line coach Jacques Cesaire early as one of two young players expected to make a big leap this season, their second year in the defense. The other was Isaiah McGuire, who did get increased reps, playing in six games with 2.5 sacks and three forced fumbles.

Considering the Browns didn’t draft an edge rusher high this weekend, Wright and McGuire, along with Ogbo Okoronkwo seem poised to get plenty of work on the line opposite of Myles Garrett. On the interior this draft, Cleveland added Michigan DT Mason Graham with its No. 5 pick.
