Green Bay Packers Rookie Savion Williams Given Intriguing NFL Comparison

The Green Bay Packers made the move to bring in TCU Horned Frogs standout wide receiver Savion Williams in the third round of the 2025 NFL draft. Fans were surprised to see the team use the No. 87 overall pick on a wide receiver after taking Matthew Golden at No. 23 overall to begin the draft.

Standing in at 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds, Williams is a big body but is extremely athletic. He will be a great weapon for Jordan Love and will give Matt LaFleur an extra piece to play around with in the offense.

During the 2024 college football season at TCU, Williams played in 12 games. He caught 60 passes for 611 yards and six touchdowns, but also had a solid impact on the ground. Williams rushed for 322 yards and six touchdowns on 51 attempts, averaging 6.3 yards per carry.

What should fans expect from Williams at the NFL level? An intriguing NFL comparison has been suggested.

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com has compared Williams to another intriguing two-way wide receiver threat. He thinks Cordarrelle Patterson is a solid comparison with his ability to make plays as a wideout and running the ball.

Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports gave the pick a “B-” grade and provided his analysis of the fit for the Packers and Williams.

“More WR help for Jordan Love, and Williams is the opposite style of Kyle Williams. Tall, bulky with supreme YAC flashes,” he wrote. “Not overly polished as a route runner yet not overly stiff, and he has long limbs with plus leaping ability. Scary long speed but it’s of the build-up variety. Lots of schematic possibility for Matt LaFleur with his niche specimen.”

Brian Gutekunst, the general manager in Green Bay, clearly wanted to upgrade the offense.

Williams will have a chance to earn a role early on. Along with Golden, the Packers got a lot better on offense with their two rookie wide receiver selections.
