BREAKING NEWS : Lions have 5 picks on final day of 2025 NFL draft. Time for a pass rusher?

Brad Holmes

ALLEN PARK — The Detroit Lions have addressed needs on the interior defensive line and at wide receiver and even added a legit guard prospect.

And, apologies to general manager Brad Holmes for bringing it up, again, but there remains a glaring need for an edge rusher or two.

First things first, the Lions have stuck to their ways in picking their favorite fits and prospects, no matter the outside chatter or perceived needs. They landed a run-stuffing defensive lineman in the first round in Tyleik Williams.

In the second and third rounds, they got aggressive, trading up in the order to take Georgia guard Tate Ratledge and Arkansas wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa.

“Yeah, well, those guys were identified early on in the process, just in the evaluation process,” Holmes said. “Really, it’s just at some point you’re going to run out of the — the well runs dry at some points in these drafts, so you better get the guys you really, really want, then you’ve got to worry about the rest later.

“I do look at the stuff later. I do look at what we have in the future and when we do trade future picks and all that stuff. I feel comfortable with it, but as long as the guys that we love — we don’t flinch, we just go get them.”

They view Williams as someone who fills a short-term need and profiles as a high-upside prospect to develop alongside Alim McNeill.

Ratledge should immediately compete for a starting role, making for a training camp battle to watch with guards Graham Glasgow and Christian Mahogany. He fills one of the top needs, and honestly, there shouldn’t be any complaints about this one.

TeSlaa is a more interesting discussion. The Michigan native is a fascinating prospect with his size and athleticism, not to mention the fact he’s continued to raise the bar with every stop.

But it took three third-round picks to move up to take the receiver, who, at best, is a developmental option behind Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Tim Patrick and Kalif Raymond. That’s a hefty price to pay.

However, it’s another reminder that when Holmes and the Lions fall in love with someone, they fall hard and do whatever it takes to get them. TeSlaa is one of the best athletes in the draft, and while many viewed him as a big slot option, Holmes sees more versatility in his game.

“I think he’ll be able to do both,” the general manager said. “Again, just like any other receiver, he’s going to need to develop, but he’s got the tools to play outside and win outside. He’s going to have to learn getting off press and all that stuff just like they all do, but he’s got all the physical tools, and he’s got the intangible makeup to be able to overcome that.”

So, the Lions enter the final day of the draft armed with five picks. They have two sixth-rounders and three seventh-rounders after all of the moving around the board on Friday night.

And much to the dismay of a large portion of the fanbase, they have not addressed the need for an edge rusher.

The Lions let Za’Darius Smith walk due to a cost-saving move. And the only other move they made for the defensive edges was re-signing Marcus Davenport to a one-year deal. Davenport is talented and a clear fit for Detroit’s defense.

But he’s not someone anyone can count on, especially as a potential starter at this stage of his career. Davenport has played six games in two seasons, notching only three sacks in three years.

Holmes loves to point to Aidan Hutchinson’s return for fixing the team’s issues on the edge. At the same time, that’s a huge boost, without question. That doesn’t erase the team’s need for more.

Hutchinson has been a one-man pressure creator whenever on the field for the Lions. Adding an edge rusher was a priority last year, but it is a bigger one this year, and it will remain that way until the Lions figure something out there.

Holmes has earned a ton of trust for the elite job he’s done, and it’s refreshing to see the level of conviction he has in players the Lions target. But the conversation and responses whenever the team gets asked about pass-rushing help gets lost in the murkiness of last year’s injury woes.

Let’s just put it like this — If Hutchinson played the entire season last year and entered the offseason with a clean bill of health, finding help on the defensive edges would still be among, if not the biggest need for this NFC contender.

Hutchinson played only five games last year and led the team in sacks by 3.5. He even finished tied for third on the team in pressures with 45. Williams will help eat some blocks and open lanes, but he’s not going to move the needle when it comes to wreaking havoc on quarterbacks, at least as a rookie defender.

It’s going to be hard to find an impact player on the final day of the draft. The Lions don’t have a pick until the sixth round, but they have the ammunition to move into the fourth- or fifth-round if they fall in love with an available option.

“If we don’t (draft an edge rusher), we don’t,” Holmes said. “We’re not going to chase a position. The guy has to be a good player that we love. Now, I’m not saying that there are not good players that other people might have higher — might be. But we’re not going to take a player that we don’t value as high just because he plays a position.

“I’ve been telling you guys that forever. I don’t know why — but I mean, you guys keep asking the question because we had injuries last year, right? I just want to make that clear, right? Because we had injuries last year, that’s why you guys keep — that’s fair.”

With the Lions picking so late in the order on Saturday, it’s hard to come up with a list of potential edge rushers to watch.

But considering where they are picking, names to watch include Ohio State’s Jack Sawyer, Ole Miss’ Jared Ivey, SMU’s Elijah Roberts, BYU’s Tyler Batty and Cal Poly’s Elijah Ponder.
