BREAKING : Bengals’ Trey Hendrickson contract saga has teams ‘watching closely’

Bengals' Trey Hendrickson contract saga has teams 'watching closely' - Yahoo Sports

The Cincinnati Bengals remain highly unlikely to trade defensive end Trey Henrickson and no firm deadline to solve his contract standoff exists.

Hence, much of the reporting around the saga ends up sounding the same now that free agency has mostly dried up.

Still, it’s worth noting that the NFL draft is a time some view as a possible avenue for a Hendrickson trade because the event annually sees notable trades like that happen as it unfolds.

As such, the Washington Post’s Jason La Canfora has offered the following update:

“And trust me, the rest of the league is watching closely. According to several NFL executives who have gauged the Bengals’ trade interest on Hendrickson, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they are not permitted to publicly discuss players under contract to another team, the Bengals want first-round value for the veteran if they do deal him. Numerous teams have dangled midround picks but to no avail.”

It’s no great shock that teams have made offers to the Bengals. They’ll continue to watch, too, on the off chance the Bengals change up their asking price. This is especially the case if Duke Tobin and Co. take a pass rusher in the first round.

Even if they do draft an edge rusher early, though, the Bengals remain unlikely to budge on their high asking price for the NFL’s sack leader, especially when the defense needs so much help. He’s the only sure thing on the edge after Sam Hubbard’s retirement despite the return of Joseph Ossai and the presence of former first-rounder Myles Murphy.

For now, the Bengals continue to hold all the leverage over Hendrickson, no matter how much the two parties spar back and forth in public.
