The Kansas City Chiefs fell short of winning a third straight Super Bowl this season, and they will now be looking to bounce back next year. The Chiefs have been making some moves this offseason, but with the NFL draft coming up, the team has more chances to improve.
With an aging Travis Kelce, Mahomes has had to rely on younger wide receivers to do damage. But It seems that the three-time champion wants a chance for the upcoming season.
Just before the start of the draft, Mahomes sent a message on what he wants the offense to look like next year. The veteran signal-caller specifically mentioned his desire to throw the ball deep once again.
“If you look at the only real positive I think from the Super Bowl, it was the second half—me just kind of getting back to, ‘We’ve got to throw the ball deep,'” Mahomes mentioned, via Pete Sweeney of SB Nation.
“There were opportunities in games for deep shots that I either didn’t take or we missed barely. If we can get back to hitting some of those throws, we tried to preach about this last offseason, it opens up the rest of the offense,” Mahomes told reporters on Wednesday. “That helps the run game, that helps the medium pass game, everything. You want to get back to that. Defenses are starting to creep up a little bit more and force us to get back to the deep throws. We have to be versatile enough to be able to do both, hit the deep shots and hit the near stuff and that’s when we’ll be at our best.”
The Chiefs would be wise to listen to Mahomes, but they could be slightly limited on what they can do. Kansas City has reworked the offense multiple times over the last few years, so it could be happening once again.
This team is at its best when Mahomes can throw the ball all around the field. Far too often this past season, Mahomes was struggling to find consistency on offense, and it finally caught up to him in the Super Bowl against the Eagles.
