BREAKING NEWS : 4 players the Cowboys could (or should) trade during the 2025 NFL Draft

Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Mazi Smith

In addition to the plethora of new players the Dallas Cowboys have signed in free agency during this 2025 NFL offseason, they’ve also made a few new additions via trades.

First, on March 12, the first official day of the new League Year, America’s Team struck a deal with the Buffalo Bills to acquire cornerback Kaiir Elam, also receiving a sixth-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft in exchange for a 2025 fifth-rounder and a 2026 seventh-rounder.

Later that same afternoon, Jerry Jones & Co. agreed to a trade with the Tennessee Titans, with Dallas receiving linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr. and a 2025 seventh-rounder in exchange for a 2025 sixth-rounder.

A few weeks later, on April 3, the Cowboys got Dak Prescott a new backup quarterback, coming to terms on a trade with the New England Patriots to acquire Joe Milton and a 2025 seventh-rounder in exchange for a 2025 fifth-rounder.

As you can see, Dallas didn’t unload a single player in any of these trades, giving up only draft picks. And with the picks they received in return, the Cowboys currently have 10 selections in the upcoming draft, some of which could be used to make more deals.

And if Jones wanted or needed to sweeten some of those deals, there are a few players on the roster with whom the Cowboys could part ways without doing any significant damage to the depth chart.

Mazi Smith, DT

Taken by the Cowboys with the 26th overall pick in the first round in 2023, defensive tackle Mazi Smith hasn’t even come close to living up to his draft status, recording just 54 total tackles and two sacks in his first two NFL seasons.

Used more as a reserve as a rookie, the Michigan alum started all 17 games for Dallas this past season and was classified as one of the league’s worst defensive linemen by the fine folks at PFF, earning a 34.8 overall grade to rank 207th of 219 players.

One has to assume the Cowboys are looking for his replacement in the draft, and his poor performance is also likely why they signed several defensive linemen in free agency.

Jones likely wouldn’t get a ton in return for Smith, who still has two years remaining on his rookie deal. But even an early(ish) Day 3 selection might suffice. And again, perhaps he could just be the sweetener in some sort of trade if someone is willing to take him on as a project.

Luke Schoonmaker, TE

Also perhaps expendable at this point is tight end Luke Schoonmaker, another Michigan product who was taken 32 picks after Smith at No. 58 overall in 2023.

Don’t get it twisted. Schoonmaker is a solid TE2 option and caught 27 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown this past year.

But it’s become quite clear that he’s never going to overtake Jake Ferguson on the depth chart. And with several teams needing help at the position, the Cowboys may find someone desperate enough to give up a little too much to get him.

Damone Clark, LB

A fifth-round selection in 2022, linebacker Damone Clark missed a significant portion of his rookie campaign with Dallas after undergoing spinal fusion surgery, ultimately recording 47 total tackles in 10 games.

In his first full season, the LSU alum started all 17 games for the Cowboys in 2023 and actually led the team in tackles with 109.

And many of those came at middle linebacker, which isn’t even his natural position, as he’s more of a weakside kind of a player. But with the retirement of Leighton Vander Esch, Clark was thrust into the middle by Dan Quinn.

With Quinn out of the picture this past year, it seemed Clark would have more opportunities back where he’s more comfortable under Mike Zimmer.

But with the emergence of DeMarvion Overshown and Marist Liufau jumping around to steal snaps, Clark saw his playing time diminish significantly, as he started only two of the 14 games in which he appeared, making only 28 total tackles.

Now, the devastating injury to Overshown could have opened up more snaps, but with the Cowboys adding Murray and Jack Sanborn in free agency, the latter of whom spent several years with new Dallas defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, Clark could prove to be trade bait during (or before) the draft.

Malik Davis, RB

While the Cowboys lost Rico Dowdle in free agency, the running back room actually got more crowded as Dallas signed both Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders.

And with Deuce Vaughn still on the roster and the Cowboys effectively guaranteed to take a running back at some point during the draft, there may be no room left for Malik Davis, not that he ever played much anyway.

Undrafted in 2022 out of Florida, Davis appeared in a dozen games as a rookie, rushing for 161 yards and a touchdown on 38 carries. But he hasn’t logged a single carry since, so it’s no big loss if he’s traded.

Again, the Cowboys would need to find a team desperate for backs, but they might be able to add another seventh-rounder if they can find a partner.
