The Kansas City Chiefs’ defense ranked in the bottom half of the league in sacks, and they could look to the 2025 NFL Draft to improve their defensive line as a result.
In a recent mock by Ian Valentino of The 33rd Team, he thinks the reigning AFC champions should draft Texas A&M defensive linemen Nic Scourton to put alongside the two stars that the team has on the line.
“It’s time to refresh Kansas City’s aging, expensive core of talent,” Valentino writes. “Nic Scourton fits its mold of versatile talents along the defensive line who can rush the passer without giving up size. They could even beef him up to be a full-time tackle or lean him out as a full-time edge if they ever want to change schemes.”
Chris Jones and George Karlaftis III have been great for the Chiefs over the last several seasons, as they have been key contributors to the team winning two of the last three Super Bowls. But two good players does not a great defensive line make.
Scourton is a versatile player, having played linebacker, edge rusher, and interior defensive line in college. In his sophomore season at Purdue, he tallied up 10 sacks and 15 tackles for loss. He was then moved to the inside at Texas A&M and still put up numbers with 14 tackles for loss.
A player with that kind of versatility could be music to defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s ears, and could work well alongside the stars that the team already has on their defensive line.
