The Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive line deficiencies are well-known; for most, that is the most glaring need for the franchise entering the draft.
With guard Joe Thuney, who filled in at left tackle last season and is now in Chicago, and Kingsley Suamataia and Wanya Morris both unable to lock down the position, general manager Brett Veach needed to get to work this offseason.
As such, Jaylon Moore, a career backup with the San Francisco 49ers, was signed to a two-year deal. But given that he’s only got 12 starts to his name in four years, many are on the fence about the pick.
And for First Things First’s Nick Wright, who is an avid Chiefs fan, he doesn’t think it is a lock that the franchise takes a tackle in the first round, despite him taking Josh Simmons in his latest mock draft on the show.
“I say no,” Wright said. “I think because they acquired Jaylon Moore, they have put themselves in a position where there is not a spot on the team that they don’t have a guy at. I think it’s absolutely on the board that they go defensive tackle.”
Left tackle is a glaring need, but so too is a defensive tackle, with Chris Jones another year older, the position needs depth.
Kenneth Grant has been a name that has been mocked to the Chiefs regularly too, so there are many ways the franchise can go. But when Patrick Mahomes is your quarterback, he needs protection, and the Super Bowl loss should only confirm what most know—the line needs upgrading.
Whether that is via the draft or a cost-effective free agent, the Chiefs need to better protect Mahomes.
Is Jaylon Moore the answer? Right now, it appears many are undecided.
