The Kansas City Chiefs are under no illusions as to what their biggest problem is on offense, and if they are, the franchise only needs to go back and watch the Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Then it will be clear.
With a need to find a starting left tackle, the franchise signed Jaylon Moore, a backup from the San Francisco 49ers, who has only 12 starts to his name in his four years with the team.
That doesn’t exactly put to bed the fears around the position, which is why most mock drafts now have the Chiefs taking a tackle to help provide depth, but also competition for the starting role.
And long-time draft expert, Mel Kiper Jr., in his latest mock, has the Chiefs taking Ohio State’s Josh Simmons in the first round.
“If Simmons didn’t injure his knee last October, we might not be having this conversation — because his projection might be closer to the top 10,” Kiper wrote. “Kansas City tried Wanya Morris and Kingsley Suamataia at left tackle, but neither held up well. It kicked guard Joe Thuney outside, but he’s in Chicago now. The Chiefs have to find a legitimate answer, and while they signed Jaylon Moore to be that, it’s no sure thing. He was a backup in San Francisco.”
This has been a common theme over the past month, with the glaring need to fortify the left tackle position despite Moore being signed. Kingsley Suamataia is expected to be tried at guard, to replace Joe Thuney, and Wanya Morris will serve as a backup.
With Mahomes getting sacked the most in his career in 2024 (47, including postseason), it is no wonder the franchise is scrambling to protect its most valuable asset.
If Moore is the lone signing at the position, they that won’t ease fears for Chiefs Kingdom over the offensive line’s ability to protect Mahomes.
So a “legitimate answer” in Simmons might be forthcoming.
