The New England Patriots have made a flurry of roster moves already this offseason. Mike Vrabel and company already look improved from the 2024 season.
However, their work is not yet done. There are still many other things the Patriots need to do in order to boost their chances of being a playoff contender.
One of those needs is to add another wide receiver.
Granted, New England did sign both Mack Hollins and Stefon Diggs. Drake Maye will have a better wide receiver room than he had last year. But, there is one free agent left on the market the Patriots should consider bringing in for him.
Amari Cooper is still available in free agency. He is coming off of a down year in 2024, but he is still 30 years old and will only be 31 at the start of the 2025 season.
He caught 44 passes for 547 yards and four touchdowns in 14 total games last year split between the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills. The concerns about those numbers are valid, but Cooper has a strong track record of high production.
New England would not need Cooper to get back to being a No. 1 wide receiver. They would simply need him to perform like a solid No. 2.
Depending on the price tag, Cooper could be a perfect way to cap off the Patriots’ free agency moves.
Bringing in two veteran weapons for Maye in the form of Diggs and Cooper would help his development tremendously. Just two years ago in 2023 with the Browns, Cooper caught 72 passes for 1,250 yards and five touchdowns. If he can get close to those numbers, his addition would be a huge leap for New England.
Adding Cooper would also allow the Patriots to avoid having to target a wide receiver in the 2025 NFL draft. Unless they are going to take Travis Hunter, adding Cooper would be a very smart move.
While this is just an idea and there has been nothing to connect New England to Cooper, it’s a scenario to monitor
