The Kansas City Chiefs dodged another bullet in their quest to remain undefeated on Monday night when Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles took the easy extra point for the tie rather than going for two for the win after a late touchdown.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes marched down the field on the first possession of overtime and Kareem Hunt scored on a two-yard touchdown run to end the game with a 30-24 victory.
The Chiefs accumulated 291 yards passing on the night, dispersed among nine targets. JuJu Smith-Schuster wasn’t one of them.
Smith-Schuster has missed Kansas City’s last two contests with a hamstring injury and did not practice all week. He’s now been ruled out for Sunday’s matchup against the Denver Broncos too.
As he continues to recover, newcomer DeAndre Hopkins continues to get comfortable in the offense. Hopkins caught eight balls for 86 yards with two touchdowns on Monday night against the Bucs, second on the team only to some dude who’s dating Taylor Swift and plays tight end.
The Chiefs are seemingly getting healthy, as the only other person besides Smith-Schuster with an injury designation for Sunday is defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton with a knee. He finally practiced on Friday and is listed as questionable.
Mahomes (ankle), Hunt (quad) receiver Mecole Hardman (shoulder, knee), defensive end George Karlaftis (abdomen), cornerback Nazeeh Johnson (concussion), and defensive end Mike Danna (pectoral) are all set to play as they didn’t receive injury designations for Sunday.
