The Detroit Lions went 15-2 last season but once again experienced turnover during the offseason as key players including Za’Darius Smith and Carlton Davis III were not retained.
The Lions have discussed potentially bringing back Smith at a discounted rate this offseason, but much remains up in the air as Detroit prepares to put the finishing touches on its roster heading into fall camp.
On Tuesday, Lions coach Dan Campbell’s comments were revealed, including the “next challenge” his Lions must overcome as the offseason continues on its inevitable crash course for the 2025 NFL draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin later this month.
“We’ve seen the ups and downs, we’ve been through it, so this is the next challenge,” Campbell said according to Colton Pouncy of The Athletic.
“So if you say, well, you lost this guy, this guy, this guy – that to me is a slap in the face of the guys in that locker room.
The Lions are used to turnover from recent seasons, including when franchise record setting running back Jamaal Williams left the Lions for the New Orleans Saints in 2023.
The task will be for Campbell and the rest of the Lions’ brass to put it all together in time to make Detroit a Super Bowl contender, if not winner, again in 2025-2026.
“We’re looking forward to this. This will be the next challenge for us. It won’t be easy, but we’re all good with that.”
