COWBOYS NEWS: Is Drafting Ashton Jeanty A Cowboys Mistake?

The Dallas Cowboys’ run game has been a big focal point this offseason with Brian Schottenheimer hiring his offensive coaches with a gameplan in mind to run the ball down people’s throats.

The Dallas Cowboys Will NOT Draft Ashton Jeanty - Stadium Rant

But to do that, you need a quality back or a solid stable to rotate. Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders were signed in free agency to go with Deuce Vaughn and Malik Davis.

However, that quartet isn’t enough, with many thinking the Cowboys could draft a back early to get the run game juices flowing.

Boise State star Ashton Jeanty was long considered “the” guy for Dallas, but with the Chicago Bears and the Las Vegas Raiders both reportedly high on Ashton, there is a real chance he’s off the board when Dallas is up.

However, if Jeanty falls to the Cowboys at No. 12, should the franchise take him?

FanSided.com doesn’t think so.

“For quite a long time, this was the most popular pick in mock drafts, the Dallas Cowboys going with a first-round running back for the first time since Ezekiel Elliott to take Ashton Jeanty,” FanSided writes. “Nowadays, it does seem like Jeanty could be off the board before Jerry Jones comes on the clock. In any case, though, if he’s there, the Cowboys should pass. Not only is this a deep running back class in the draft but Dallas has more pressing needs at receiver, edge rusher, cornerback and so on. Dallas fans should be upset if Jeanty or any other back is the team’s first-rounder.”

Mailbag: Drafting talent at 'devalued' position?

Would Dallas fans be upset if the franchise drafted Jeanty? We highly doubt it.

Yes, receiver is another pressing need, but edge looks solid as things stand, with Micah Parsons, Sam Williams, Dante Fowler Jr., Marshawn Kneeland, and Payton Turner to give the Cowboys some options.

But what Jeanty could do in Schottenheimer’s offense would be a tantalizing thought, and it would be quite the conversation starter if he is available at No. 12 and so too is Tetairoa McMillan or Matthew Golden as to which way the franchise should go.

If Jeanty is there, will Jerry Jones be able to resist? FanSided thinks he should be based on other needs. But when a player of his caliber is available, you take him and figure out the rest later.
